Homebuilt Turbocharged Hot Rod Spurs Entertaining Build Thread

Forum-goer 5spd-iroc has created a build thread for this wonderfully ambitious big-power muscle project, and we can’t wait to follow along with the progress made. Something like this could only be dreamed up at tea time with the Mad Hatter, but very few would actually follow through on the dream. This is a 1985 Chevrolet Camaro (a third-gen) IROC Z28 that is about to get something really interesting under the hood. To make things all the better, this car has been dubbed “Project Turd-gen”.

The Camaro started life as a 305-powered five-speed, and made it to 93,000 miles before 5spd-iroc started messing with the formula. First it was treated to a high compression 406ci small block, but that didn’t provide enough power, and now it’s in the shop for a complete rebuild for huge numbers.

Enter a six-liter LS that has been bored and stroked out to 6.58 liters (402 cubic inches). High-flow ported/polished LSA cylinder heads sit atop the block to facilitate maximum boost from a pair of giant turbochargers. ARP head studs will hopefully keep the boost inside the cylinder, and the deck has been fitted with copper o-rings to make that surface seal better than any gasket ever could. There’s no telling how much power this engine will make, but the build’s aim is to hit quadruple digits on pump gas with methanol injection.

This massive power monster will be backed by a Tremec T56 manual, which means ‘5spd-iroc’ will have to change usernames to ‘6spd-iroc’ to maintain authenticity. Out back is a Moser-built 12-bolt rear end. Both should be able to handle 1000 horsepower hopefully with little issue.

There is so much more to this build, and as mentioned before they’re just getting started, so be sure to subscribe to this thread in order to follow along with the insanity as it unfolds. We look forward to the day when 5spd can tear up the drag strip in their home-built hopped up Turdgen.
