Question 4l60e/4l65e/4l70e >>> 6l80e/6l90e

Perhaps I'll have more luck with response here.

https://ls1tech.com/forums/automatic-transmission/973034-4l60e-4l65e-4l70e-6l80e-6l90e.html

Ok I have seen the multiple threads on the pros/cons on it and see Speartech now has a kit. Simple question.

I can see the 6 speed is bigger around than the 4 speed. Has anyone measured and documented the various circumference differences between these 2 trannies? IE clearing various floorpans...specifically the TBSS!

I see there is a length difference of 35mm in the two 6L's, but what's the length difference between the 6 speed and 4 speed?

What year TBSS do you have? Keep in mind that the 58 tooth relector ring didn't show up until 07 on these motors. (required for the 6L80/90 Trans)

I think it's been beaten to death on the TBSS forums.

Transmission tunnel modifications required.

Here is a good illustration of the size difference:

Referring to the shots Phil dropped in, the trans are roughly the same length.

At the front (where the convertor housing joins the main case), the dimensions are similar, and as the profile heads to the rear of the trans, the size gets in the way. The rear of the case is 8" in diameter. You can scale off this.

The pan is narrower than the 4L60/65, but overall deeper because the trans is taller at the rear, by 2 - 3".

The pan actually takes up less room (in i.e. a Camaro tunnel), than the 4L.

I think I have the dimensions written down somewhere, which I took when I took the photos originally.

Trust this helps.

Cheers.

Wouldn't it be longer in a 4x4 application vs a 4l60? Because of were the transfer case adapter mounts vs the 4l60. Looks like 3'' or more?

From what I have seen, the core case is the same on the 6L80 and 6L90 regardless of application. And yes then the transfer case, or the transaxle in the case of Corvette, bolts on. (And if I recall correctly, the case on the 4L's is the same too....but who knows what variations are out there that GM has released...)

I know the case are te same lenght 4x4 vs 4x2. I am talking about the differents in the case lenghts between the 4l60 to the 6l80 were the tailhousing or transfercase/axle bolts. it look 3'' to 4'' from were the 4l60 is.

The 4x4 6l80 has a shorter output shaft than the 4x2.

Isn't the 6l80 a 32 spline output same as the 4l80?

If you mean the extension housing, yes. 6L80/90 are shorter that 4L60/5. The 6L90 shown has an extension housing ~6" long (excluding the boot).

I have not checked the 6L80 personally, but have been advised it is the regular size spline. 6L90 very large.

The black "plug" in the pic is the rear bush of the shift shaft internally.

There is no drain plug. The plug in the pan is a level check plug.

Default Engine Swap (transfer case bolt pattern)

Sorry, need help!

did an engine swap for a pajero/montero

it has a 4l60e currently.... so i would like to change it to a 6 speed transmission (6l80e)
the thing is that I'm not sure whether the transfer case adapter will bolt straight on to the 6l80e.
so i need your help to tell me whether the 4l80e and the 6l80e bolt pattern are the same or not (linking to the transfer case)
got the transfer case adapter from marks4wdadapter
so if anyone, please help

would really appreciate any input

Thanks

Alright, I've been wondering that since I'll be swapping a 4l into a '13 SS Camaro that came with a 6l, will I need to modify the trans tunnel? I'm also going to be putting a Gear Vendors gear splitter on the end of the 4l so how long will it end up being? I"m wondering about the modded length so I know how long to get the driveshaft made in case anyone was wondering.

Just wondering - why are you going from the 6l to the 4l ? I have read from several forums that the 6l was a much better tranny?

thanks!

I have a 2008 Chevy Silverado with a 4L60e in it. Is it possible to swap to the 6L80e?
