Default Swap a 6.2L into a 2007 4.8L Silverado

Hello, I have a 2007 New Body Style 4.8L 4 speed automatic Silverado Reg. Cab short bed with the locking diff.. I would like to swap the 4.8L for the 6.2L L92 engine part#19165485. The 6.2L has the VVT and the 4.8L does not. Can the ECM be programmed to run the VVT and keep the original 4l60E transmission programing and does the 6.2L bolt up to the 4l60E transmission. I don't want to swap out the transmission to the 6 speed because there would be a lot more parts involved. Thanks for any help.

The 6.2 will def. bolt up to the 4L60E you have, as for the programming, I am pretty sure the 4.8L in the '07 uses the same computer as the 6.2, so programming should be no problem. I am working with someone on a very similar swap right now.

you need to address that trans... I know you said you dont want to swap it out but trust me from experience... you combine the weight of the truck (esp the new ones) with the tq of that motor and you'll break hard parts with ease... especially if you have big tires and/or good traction.

Look into a built unit at the very least... or a 4L80E if you dont want to mess with the 6spd auto. I have broken 7 transmissions with a cammed 5.3 on some juice... its not hard if you are hooking and weighing 4500+ hell, I broke one with damn near stock power.

should be a fun swap... lemme find a link for you I think you'll find it interesting. and if you havent already, mosey on over to performancetrucks.net we can answer all of your truck related questions a little quicker over there because of the huge knowledge base to work with.

Thanks for the great info. I guess I'll be getting the 2007 2WD Escalade enging and transmission for the swap. What about the programming for the ECM? So basicly what I need is a modified driveshft and a reprogrammed ECM to make this project work. I will be also heading over to PerformanceTrucks.net too.

Wow, swapping a motor in an 07. Sounds like a cool swap though.

I wish I still had my reg cab/short bed, 4.8, 5 speed, 04 SS clone. I have a 6.2 in the garage that would have made that truck way more fun!

BTW, hit up Speartech. They can hook you up w an ECU and custom harness to run the VVT in your truck.

And +1 on upgrading the trans, or your fun may end soon.

I ended up buying an LS3 with the 480HP and upgraded the transmission cooler to a B&M Hi-Tek SuperCooler with Fan. Now I'm just waiting for Dan at Masport to install the new engine and do the ECM tune. I'm planning on holding on to the engine for another project but I'll let you know if I dont use it, it only has 8k miles.

What kind of tuning are you going to have to do in order to get the LS3 to work in there? Will you have to get an entire new PCM/ECU, or tune the stock one?
Also, not to hijack the thread, but does the 07/08 5.3L also use the same computer as the 4.8L/6.0L/6.2L?

Just a retune on the stock ECM. Yes the ECM's are the same for the 07/08, I was going to buy an extra one but then decided not to because of the extra cost and I will never take my truck to a dealer to get it repaired, I'll just do it myself or take it to Masport.

I got the same truck as u but 5.3 and am looking at the same set up..
So what all had to be changed on the truck, engine mount..etc?
was it a fairly simple swap?

You can swap the 5.3 for the 6.2 with the VVT with no problem, same parts. The 4.8 does not have the VVT thats why I went with the LS376/480 crate engine. The cool thing is it looks completely stock, except for the aluminum block.

The 4.8/5.3 don't have VVT well till the 2010 models anyway.

The 6.2l is a bolt in swap. Just add the wires for the VVT and retune the ECM. Pretty easy. And a 6.2l/6l80 swap is easy as well just get the correct trans cross-member. Remove the 4l60 wiring and TCM, then add the 6l80 wires and reflash the ECM.

Reluctor wheel conversions are only an issue when swapping between Gen III and Gen IV motors. All of the newer stuff uses the same reluctor wheel.

There will be major issues if you try to reflash a different OS into your e38 PCM. Fortunately for you the 2010 and up 4.8L'scome with VVT and still run the 4L60 so you need one of the PCM's from one of those and either add the VVT pins into your harness or just swap it out with another one. Its not a big deal AT ALL in my opnion to swap one of these in. Im swapping a VVT 6.2L into a six speed camaro and its not posing much challenge. These message boards will be your best friend though and I have yet to take any of my swap builds to a shop where the owners dont just scratch their heads. They typically dont know jack about custom builds so dont let this shops opinion frighten you.

Everything you want to do will simply have a bolt in solution as you are only adding cubes to the same platform. The 6.2 and 48 are physically identical so its only adding in a new PCM and a few wires for VVt and matching up the correct parts you have to worry about.

I say go for it
