Default What happens if you run too much engine oil?

JIffy lube put 3/4 of a quart too much oil in my wife's car, takes 5.5qt and they put 6.25qt in the engine. She drove it about 100 miles before I caught the error. We took the car back to jiffy and had them drain it out.

Car runs fine, but how would I know if there was any damage to the crank seal or anything else? What is the root cause of problems due to too much oil..oil pressure too high damaging seals/bearings?

This is a 9k mile brand new engine and I need it to run 250k miles, I am now concerned that this stupid error has compromised the engine.

3/4 quart didn't do anything. All it did was reduce fuel economy because of drag on the crank. I used to overfill my Honda intentionally by almost a half quart. Did that for 20,000 miles and totally ran perfect. Every time the motor was out it looked great.

other than the seals issue, the big problem with overfilling is that every rotation of the crank basically slaps the surface of the oil.

assuming it's filled THAT much.

but i wouldn't worry to much about it.

I think alot of you guys are forgetting to factor the Windage Tray into play..

I don't run one, but just about every factory Engine would have one..

All those shops are notorious for overfilling. I dont trust anyone doing any oil changes. 3/4 of a quart I wouldnt worry about. Im sure it didnt do anything.

Any problems due to high crankcase pressure would have shown up right away. So it was not overfilled to the piont that causes damage. This is not something you want to find out where the tipping point is.

6.25qt in an LS1 is no problem. I always use 6qt. IIRC, you can run up to about 7qt and still not be touching the crank.
