Default LS1 Thermostat Housing

Has anyone else wanted to switch the direction of the LS1 cooling input pipe (thermostat housing) so that it points straight ahead?

Will a generic Chevy aftermarket thermostat housing work or is the LS1 special? If it is, do you know of anyone that sells a straight in thermostat housing?

We cut & welded the housing on the Cobra we have, just to alter the angle.

www.tunedport.com sells one with a swivel neck, though I'm sure it isn't cheap. Don't know of anyone selling a straight one.

I don't think a regular SBC housing would work. If you look at it the center shaft goes up to the housing. A SBC housing doesn't have this feature. maybe if you used a SBC thermostat too??? The spacing of the bolt hole does look similar. I would buy a gasket and see if they line up. If worst came to worst. I see no reason you couldn't make an adapter out of a ½ " piece of aluminum. It is kind of hard to explain what I am thinking, but it would have one set of bolt holes that line up with the LS1 water pump, and at 90 deg. To them another set for a standard SBC.

A SBC apartment doesn't accept this feature. maybe if you acclimated a SBC thermostat too??? The agreement of the bolt aperture does attending similar. I would buy a gasket and see if they band up. If affliction came to worst. I see no acumen you couldn't accomplish an adapter out of a ½ " section of aluminum.

Try looking for "water neck" (what many outfits call it) at

www.speedwaymotors.com, www.summitracing.com, jegs.com etc

The LSx water necks have a counterbore that fits LSx thermostats; this is why the gen 1&2 SB Chevy water neck housuings may not work.

I used this one:

http://www.csr-performance.com/Merch...ry_Code=CP3SGC

It uses a standard small block Chevy thermostat, I just asked for one from a 350 Camaro. The thermostat fits slightly loose in the housing and it is supposed to in order to let a small amount of water get past for circulation. Been 3 years this month and about 10k miles with no problems. Using a 180 degree stat and that's where the motor runs most of the time.

Has anyone used a thermostat housing/water neck of this type?
I'm just curious about the compatibility of a SB thermostat with an LS water pump.
Thanks!

On your recommendation, I bought this one for my YJ Jeep swap. It doesn't fit without some massaging with the grinder. You have to slot the bolt holes as well as grind the water pump to clear the ears that hold the thermostat in the housing. But, it does point straight and clear the belt. $20 and 15 minutes.
