I just had to do this on the viper. It was loosing the coolant during the winter and need to be recharged every spring. It turned out to be a o ring on the compressor. $.50 oring and a recharge and its been all good for years.
So I would dye test it to find were its leaking from to keep from recharging it.

I think its about $7 a can. 2 cans should do it. R-134 or something like that.

Probably just needs some service. Same thing happened to me this summer too. Didn't use it all year and when it started to get hot, I turned it on to warm air just like you said. I figured it was just from it not being in use and it slowly started getting colder by the day and fixed itself

More than likely you have a leak. So you need to find the leak and repair it and recharge the system with r134

If the dryer is getting really cold on the engine compartment... it probably has enough freon in the system to work. If thats the case, you may want to take it to a professional, they will hook up the gauges and read the pressures, based on those readings they should tell if its like a bad expansion valve.

If the compressor clutch is coming on the belt is fine.

When it comes to A/C work, guessing will not solve the problem. You need to bring it to a professional to have them hook it up to a set of gauges, check for leaks, see if the system holds vacuum, etc.

It could be anything from a leaking o-ring to a clogged evaporator core, so your best bet is to take it to a pro.

Dont do that. If the compressor clutch turns on then there is refrigerant in the system. Using the gauge they supply you with when you buy the canned R134A probably wont give you an accurate reading, and you could easily overfill the system. You could try it, and it will probably work for a few days assuming you have a leak, but it could lead to more problems in the long run. When it comes to AC work if you dont know what your doing you could easily screw something up and end up paying alot more money in the end. Just go to a proffesional and get it done right the first time. Good luck!
