i have a 99 that is knocking and i am just gonna buy a junk yard engine to install
i heard certain years came with the ls6 intake but wich engine should i look for

01-02 have ls6 intake... I think you can get a 6.0 w/799 heads that would be a great step up...out of trucks or an ls2 out of a 05-06 gto w/ 243 heads.. voorrromm vorrrommm

The lq4 and the lq9 6.0 out of the trucks didn't come with 799 castings they came with 317s.

The only really meaningful upgrade the 01+ 5.7 LS1's have over the earlier years is the Z06 conn. rod bolts for a little more stability at higher rpms should you decide to cam it. Other than that they have slightly bigger injectors and the LS6 intake.

If going with an LS1, the 2002. The 02's had the coated piston that were introduced in March 01 (late 01 production) and the new rings (introduced in the third week of 02 production). This engine also had the LS6 intake. Better still would be an 04 which had the LS6 block, many had the LS2 timing chain and many of the blocks are drilled for the later LS2 timing chain damper even though the LS1 didn't come with one.

No, as far as the LS1 itself is concerned ... 03 is correct for the earlier 04 GTOs produced like mine (Dec 03). When going to buy head bolts many people have found out that they have a 03 block.

I would look at it like this you already have one junk yard Ls1 why buy another.



Why not sell the 6.0 and rebuild your 99 block?Would be a good time to maybe stroke it 383.

Yeah totally irrelevant unless the OP is looking through junkyards for a Ls1 from a 03 model GTO.

i have not totally decided against building mine.
i bought the car like this and it is totaly stock no bolt ons what so ever it has good oil preassure and oil looks good but it has a knock and the oil sample came back high metal
it has 111000 miles so what do you think could have done the damage to it.

You can do a rebuild cheaper then buying a used motor then you will know for sure what you have. Update your rod bolts while your in there.Sell your 6.0 to make up for some of the funding and grab up a set of 243s or 799s.

what if i went ahead and did a cam and the 243 heads could i retain my stock exhaust and do the bolt ons as i go that way i dont have to change the all that stuff later.
