Default what fluid goes into a manual transmission

what fluid goes into a manual transmission? i am totally clueless and confused. i have tranny leak, so the fluid is low. want to use lucas or bars tranny stop leak, but no one knows for sure including me what fluid goes in the transmission? i have a hayes book, it says dextron II. A mechanic at my work place told me differential oil, like 90w or something? i went to a 10 minute oil change garage, they say the tranny takes regular 10w30 or 10w40 motor oil? i was reading through the forum and some mention dextron III or atf fluid. I am the fourth owner, so the manual is long gone. can someone tell me what tranny oil to use and what tranny stop leak to use. leaking through seals

If it is a T-56 six speed, it takes Dexron III automatic transmission fluid. Yes...a manual transmission that uses automatic transmission fluid.

+999 ATF is the fluid you need, don't put anything else in it, or risk hurting your tranny

Water. ...

I kid I kidd... don't do that. It won't work. Anyhow. Ya ATF works. The DEX III and IV are the traditional. Some guys out there are going to a synthetic. Guess thats up to you and how you feel. Don't use motor oil please.

Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF is reccommended by most rebuilders and performance shops, thats what I run and I've been happy with it.

i'm sorry, i forgot to mention its for a t5 with 89500 miles on it. plus what transmission stop leak do you guys recommend? The gaskets or seals that seperate the transmission from the bellhousing and tailshaft housing, seems always wet to the touch. dropping fluid on the exhaust. Causing a constant burnt oil smell when you are driving and worst when you got the heat and the blower on high.

Hmm are you sure the oil leaking is from the tranny? Possibly not from the transmission at all and is engine oil.... My car drips enough oil for me to smell oil with the heater on, but not enough to leave any on the ground....go figure...
