Default G-Body C5 Vette Frt Brakes w/ Blazer ZQ8 Spindles (w/ drawing)

I got this idea from Marcus at SC and C, and its been covered on other forums, but not w/ mechanical drawing.

Apparently S10 front suspension components are interchangeable w/ G-body vehicles . There was one S10 Blazer (only the 98+, 2-door, 2wd) that came equipped w/ spindles w/ bearing packs and larger dual piston PBR calipers and 11” rotors. This Blazer spindle bolts onto the G-body suspension and lends itself to C5 front brake conversions. This should give my Monte a big boost in braking over the stock front disks.

The parts needed for this conversion include the following: (all from Ebay):
-Blazer lh and rh front spindles and matching bearing packs
-C5 Corvette lh and rh calipers, lh and rh rotors, abutment brackets, pads
-8x M14 x 2.0 x 30 or 35mm lg Socket head screws (I used 4x M14 flange
head bolts that came w/ my Blazer spindles)
-Lh and rh adapter bracket (See attached .pdf file) and pictures. The only difference rh to lh, is the location of a snag ground relief to clear bosses on the Blazer spindles (see callouts on drawing).

Notes:
-I’m going to use the dust shields that came w/ Blazer spindles (out for powder coat). They are 0.050” thick, and sandwich between the three bolt flange on bearing pack and spindle. If you decide not to use, you may need a 0.050 spacer between bearing pack and spindle.

-When viewing the .pdf file:
a) Use the rotate ccw button to make picture easier to view
b) To zoom the drawing in and out, hold down the "ctrl" key and roll the
mouse wheel

Are you using the blazer rotors too? What about larger rotors?

Default Rotor Size

This adapter is designed to use stock Corvette C5 rotors, calipers, abutment brackets, and pads. The rotors are 325mm (12.8") dia.

To go w/ a bigger rotor (Vette Z51 or C6 components, etc) the adapter bracket would have to be re-designed. (The 3mm centerline dimension would increase)

17" wheels (minimum) are required to clear the C5 Vette calipers, and going to bigger rotors might require even larger wheels. For G-body fenderwells, 17" wheels are the largest I want to attempt.

Default Completed Pictures

Got some suspensions components and "tall" ball joints on order from Marcus at SC&C that will be installed w/ the brake package.

Also, the larger brakes will require new 17" wheel/tire combination.

Will post pics and results when completed...

Default Status Update

Monte w/ S10 ZQ8 spindles and C5 brakes still not complete..... Waiting for Yr 1 to produce the 86up Monte 17 x 8 N90 wheel they have promised this summer.

The SC&C Street-Comp Stage 2+ front suspension package has been installed w/ SPC upper and lower controll arms and tall ball joints.

I was able to borrow a Billet Specialities 17 x 8 wheel w/ 4.5" backspace and the same 235/45 ZR17 tire I intend to run on the Monte front end for purposes of fitment check. Seems that 4.5" backspace is about perfect for my combination.

Caution that not all 17" wheels will clear the C5 rotor 7.74" radius dim from wheel centerline over top of caliper, and also the .78" dim from wheel flange to back of spoke on wheel. (Small wheel spacers may be necessary clear the face of the caliper.

More pics when the project is complete.

Default Status Update Rev2

Its been a while, but finally got the front spindles w/ C5 brake components installed on the Monte.

Gave up waiting for Yr 1 to release 17" N90 wheels and bought Street Lites and Nittos on sale from the Driverz boys in CA. Wheels are 17 x 8's w/ 4.75" backspace on all 4. For caliper clearance, currently using .25" thick wheel spacers (but may go to .38 or even .5 for the fronts, there is only .12 clearance between caliper face and inside of wheel spokes). The thick wheel flange and spacer dictated longer 2.5" lg ARP studs. The "as cast" wheel spacers are surprisingly flat and only measured .004 TIR runout indicating on the rotor surface.

The 255/45 ZR17's rears may need a small spacer as there is currently 1/8-3/16 clearance between tire and frame rails.

The center caps are out for powder coating, and maybe the lug nuts as well.

Will post up finished pics when caps are received... now to do something about the 10-bolt rear....I think it is not long for the world and may be making noise already.

Default Status Update Rev3

Had some requests for the drawing of the adapter plate, so am posting these additional pics. All photos are of the drivers side spindle. In the first pic, the counterbores for the pads of the adbutment brackets can be seen assembled. This counterbore centers up the opening in the adbutment bracket on the thickness of the rotor (see last photo). In the second, at the bottom left the snag ground clearance can be seen to clear the adapter plate and spindle close to the bottom M14 bolt. The 3rd photo shows abutment bkt assembled to drivers spindle.

The adapter plate is symmetrical (drivers side to pass side) with the only exception the snag ground clearance as shown in the drawing and in the second photo.

What about the rest of the brake system?...
Did you use your Monte Master Cylinder and proportion valve?...Any other changes if you were leaning towards a 4whl disc system?...

Thanks and Great idea and execution...Really nice used C5 brake stuff from vette owners upgrading is available fairly cheap...I like that!!!...

Talked to Tobin @Kore3, he suggested stock Monte disk/drum master cylinder and stock combination valve would be fine for the Monte w/ C5 disk fronts and stock drum rear brakes.

This seems to be good advise, as the car's braking w/ the C5 fronts/drum rears is excellent. There is no rear lockup, and I'm able to lock the disk fronts on high effort stops.

When the C5 disk rears are added, he said to remove the cartridge from the rear brake circuit of the combination valve and install a proportioning valve in the rear circuit. I'll post up pictures when this is completed.

Nice setup. Any idea how the c5 fronts, stock braking system, and lt1 camaro rear discs would work together?

2005 is C6 vintage, however as long as the brake rotors are the "standard" Corvette model ø325mm x 32mm thick (ø12.80" x 1.26") , this adapter should work fine. (2005 Z51 and Z06 rotors are ø340mm and ø355mm, which would require re-design of adapter plate).
With the bigger rotors and calipers, at least 18" wheels would be required.

This is some GOOD info!!! Is there a write up/drawing on how to make caliper adapters for the C5 rear disc brakes to go on a g-body?
