as the title states, how do you get black paint off of chrome wheels without hurting the chrome?

anybody overcome this before? is it possible? let me know what you think.

the chrome is still in good shape im pretty sure yes. ive had suggestions of a clay bar maybe working?

is that a good option? any other suggestions?

can of never dull any auto parts store sells it.

anybody else ever try this 'never dull' solution and have it work?

just trying to get all the info i can on this problem before i end up having 10 failed solutions and buying 20 different products

Clay bar FTW

It'll take a while, and when you're done you'll be sore. Clay bars are one of those things that everyone needs to have, I've used it to take overspray off paint, and chrome wheels.

ive had several people say clay bar, so i will probably just go with that it sounds like for my first try and see what happens.

i just had a guy on another forum say that a clay bar definately wont work, does that mean it wont get the paint off or that it will damage the chrome, he didnt explain?

or should it work?

I think a clay bar would be time consuming, and I personally dont think it would work. Was the paint cleared?

im not 100% sure on how the paint was surfaced onto the wheels because i did not paint them. there is black paint on a set of ANKA chrome wheels that i am wanting to remove, it looks like the paint is just a spray of some sort and not done professionally because you are starting to see the chrome.

im just trying to ask the best possible way to get it off without damaging the chrome.

any other suggestions?

ive heard of a clay bar, acetone, and paint thinner so far, which one should do the trick for good?

Ive used some chrome polish and a VERY fine steel wool to clean off over spray from my former '56 Chevy Bel Air chrome bumper.

and before anyone asks..... no, fine steel wool didnt scratch it.

i may try the chrome polish first and then go over it with some fine wool and see if that can get it off any, but im assuming its going to take something pretty drastic to get this paint off, and yes it will be time consuming, but it will be worth it if it gets the job done.

nope, stick with the steel wool and rubbing compound. It's your best bet of not killing your arm v.s not hurting the chrome.

thanks justin, besides the steel wool, what brand of rubbing compound would you guys suggest?

anybody have any experience of one kind working better then the other?

this is going to be my weekend project, so i will let you know what i get out of these options stated above.

I'm not sure but i have used aircraft stripper on cleared polished wheels with great results. Just not sure if it would hurt the chrome, if you had a old chrome wheel you could try it on the old wheel first.
