HELP!!!!!1999 trans am header install (time= taken a month and counting!!) We have tried 2 sets of headers...first set were dynatech's and now pacesetters... haven't been able to figure out the problem/// the headers are hitting the steering shaft...BAD... the only solution that we can come up with is to change the rack and pinion to a 2000-02 because the angle of the steering shaft and rack and pinion are different... can this be done????

both set's will bolt up fine. i'm guessing you're trying to put the driver side header in and it's hitting the steering shaft. have you disconnected the steering shaft? this will open up a lot of room.

yes its the drivers side and i have taken it out but it won't go back in is the problem....both the header and steering shaft cant be on at the same time

can you post up some pics of how it's hitting the steering shaft? i've never heard of this problem so we can probably help you out better if you post up some pics. i have pacesetters as do a lot of people here. i had to disconnect my steering shaft to get them to fit. i don't know is relevant, when you bought the pacesetters, were they specifically for the 98-99 year?

as far as i know and have been told is that the difference between 98-99 and 00-02 headers is that there is a extra air or egr port.... i would have to get pics tommorow

??? huh it takes me half hour to install them on my own??? have you ground down the metal tab on the motor to allow it to fit or pulled the motor mount to help? i mean ive heard of headder problems....but not this bad lol

if you take the steering shaft out you can slide the headers in and bolt them up in 5 minutes...the problem is that the steering shaft wont go back on because the header is in the way

yes the 98-99 headers have an EGR port on the very top of the passanger side header on the first tube about 1 inch from the flange. has your rack and pinion ever been changed before, cause you have a V-6 one on there now. i had the same problem, i changed my rack and pinion and couldnt get the steering shaft back in cause the angle on the rack and pinion was different. you need a rack and pinion with the FE2 package, not the F41. these codes are on the side of the drivers door, make sure you have the FE2 package. but you just need to change your rack and pinion to the FE2 style is what it sounds like. runs for $250.

Trans Am7935 is right on the money. If you had the FE2 package rack and pinion, you'd have no problems with it. The v-6 rack and pinion has an almost vertical steering shaft. This would cause problems for your longtube headers.
part numbers are not the same....you want...Part Number: 22-185.
Install that and you'll be set

this is my car at the moment.... we will be trading soon... the rack that is on there is vertical like ull said... thanks for the help... we will be putting a new rack on it and i think that will fix everything... we will post some pics and keep ull updated..

make sure u install the drivers side bolt upside down for easy removal when you put it back it, cause to get that one out you have to disconnect the drivers side motor mount and jack it up about 2 inches to get the bolt out, i just put it in upside down for easy access later, just in case.

Which order are you trying to re-install the steering shaft and headers? I've had this problem before and the only thing I had to change was the order in which the parts went on.
Unless the car has been wrecked and the frame was shifted in some way, you shouldn't be having this problem. I've installed probably 100 sets of headers over the years, and never once had to replace the rack.

tryed both...with the shaft on and with it off...with it off you can bolt it up fine but the shaft wont go back on and with the shaft on you cant get the header to go into place because the main primary is hitting it so bad

so i went to a salvage and got a rack and pinion and steering shaft from an 02 camaro and it works perfect... i now have and inch to inch and a half or so of clearance for the header...thanks for the help guys
