You do not need to pull the motor. You need talent, patience, and if its your first time, about 8 hours.

I could see a shop charging 3 hours. It's a big job the first time you do it. Once you know how, it's not that bad.

Yeah but i dont know the last thing about cars so i would have to pay someone to do it. My motor is really up in there so a shop may have to do it.

Wear gloves if your arms are skinny enough to get the plugs from the top. Otherwise get the back ones from underneath.

I have to take the coil packs off to get to them from the top, the back ones that is. Its a PITA on a 98, but substantially cheaper than the 700 that GM quoted me for the job nearly a decade ago.

3hrs to change plugs!? in a V6 S-10 maybe... they aren't that bad on the LS cars just gotta get under the belly of the beast for the back 2.... probe around a little i bet you could find a guy on the forums to help you out, for a case of beer and a 100 bucks.

Edit: ah i see you said charge 3hrs... a mechanic that knows a f-body i'm thinkin 1 hour... but def you get charged for 3 or 4

****.... You guys must be slow at it. 45 minutes tops for me, but I've done numerous F bodies plugs. I remove the pass. coil pack bracket on 99+ cars for easy access to those plugs. First time through took about 2 hours, from there on it's a breeze for me.

I claim no mechanical expertise and it took me about 3-4 hours to swap the plugs on my old '98 TA. Now you put the title as Firebird, so are we talking 3800 or LS1? Those back two plugs on my '98 LS1 were a PITA, but a breaker bar (read a plumbing pipe stuck over the handle of my socket wrench) and several bloody knuckles later, and some luck in not breaking any plugs, you can do it without paying $400. Plan on changing the wires along with the plugs as it is common to destroy at least one along the way. Loosening or removing a couple of coil packs is a big time saver, one that I didn't learn about until I had finished the job. I did not investigate getting at them from under either.

after my first time, it only take me about 2.5 to 3 hours to change them. I have never done it from the bottom.

my first time took me 3 hours haha. I did them on a camaro two days ago and did it in 45 min (with some help). Where you at I'll do it for 100 bucks lol

Hahaha..... funny thing is I have a v6 s-10 and it takes me only 30 minutes. I am the spark plug change king!

Pulling the motor is about $1,000.00 for labor.....

BUT............the cost of spark plugs, new wires and a new fuel/air filter....which is all a tune-up consists of for an LS1, is about $70.00.

If I were you....I would leave the motor in and just change the plugs, fuel filter and air filter yourself. And just put the new wires on after the plugs go in. Save yourself $1,000.

Yup...after I did it the first two times......and MOST IMPORTANTLY realized that the plugs only need to be barely snugged tight with the socket when putting them back in......its a breeze. Drivers side is done in 15 minutes...passengers side maybe takes 20-25. Piece of cake really.

But my first time man.....I was throwing tools against the wall.....4 hours. Some jerk-off tightened the plugs way down when my 427ci engine first went together. I never changed them when it was stock.

every time ive done plugs, its always from the top.. My moms 2000 Z28 took the longest, only because i just drove for 6 hours to get there first, and i took my time. Our 00, 01 and the 02 i had were pretty easy.

Save yourself some cash, and post up in the local forum here.. Youll find someone real quick for 400.00 LOL

If you were near me, I'd do it for $50.00 for ya. Shops will rip you off. If you do end up having a shop do it, stand there and watch them do it. Just pay for that time they spend on it. It should take an EXPERIENCED mechanic 45 minutes to an hour. Any longer....they suck.

I'm always sure to use anti-seize also. Then while changing them all it takes is a flick of the socket wrench and they're loose, then fingers from there. Totally easier with the coil packs off but honestly with the right size deep socket/extension it's a 30-40 minute job tops.

Also I HAVE done the rears from the bottom but I now do them from the top. All 8
