just found out fuel pump is bad. want to cut in trap door for access to pump. is it the same for a convertible? any pictures or advice would be nice. thanks

its a pretty easy process....i did it to my car...i cut the door out, pulled the pump, put the new one in and hooked all the lines back up, cut a piece to fit over the cut out, used self drilling screws to put it down and then finally i took black silicone and sealed it up so no fumes would get into my car.... hope this helps a little bit

i had read a lot of posts about trap doors , but nun of them mentioned convertibles. thanks for reminding me about shears, i have some i have never used. i have owed mostly german cars, but now i have a 97 formula convert, and a 95 camaro convert, and on all forums i have read, there is always a guy who thinks he knows it all. i don't pay them any attention. i love cars and thats why i read this forum. what would we do without this large knowledge base. it would be much harder to fix our cars.

The verts are the same as the rest, the location never changed.
Many people cut them out as just a rectangle, and then fight to get to the connections.
My Fuel Pump went out in a friends drive way, so I got a new one, cut a door, and changed it. When I swapped that out for my Walbro 255, it took about 20 min to do it.

I just did mine and it came out sweet but I used a matabo disk but I rivet mine in and used the same piece over and made it flush..

exactly how i did it merve!! the easiest way to do it!!! cut that extra little flap in the front to help get those lines undone

Convertible is harder to do than non but compared to dropping the rear it is a piece of cake. I did mine with a full tank as well!

I know, I know - This is a site for the LS1 enthusiast. But, needing to work on the fuel pump on my 2001 Firebird convert with the 3.8, I too decided on the trap door method. But it seems the v6 models have a different fuel pump and a different tank. If you need to do a trap door on these models, you must start the access panel right along the edge nearest the trunk. The side to side measurements are the same as the v8's. You can stop 5 inches from the back seat side. Turns out I didn't need a fuel pump. A mouse (little *%$#@!) had chewed the wires to both the pump and the gas gauge. I soldered in new wire and I added a new section of plastic loom before buttoning up.

I'm doing my 01 Z28 now and I cut just like that and the pump wasnt there. Its towards the back on a LS1 Car. I'll post pics.

After drilling holes in all corners with w/ a hole saw there is no need for an air hammer or grinder. Just a good pair of tin snips. It's quicker, quieter, cleaner and safer.
