Having a debate with a friend of mine over the operating temperature of my th350. Currently I have two large external coolers mounted flat along the floor boards of my car, and on the hottest of days with lots of driving I am seeing ~160* fluid temperatures. On cooler fall days, I hardly notice the temperature gauge moving, so its about 100* give or take. These readings also depend on the accuracy of my temp gauge, and location of sensor which is after the coolers.

I have always heard that you want the transmission to be as cold as possible, while my friend says it should be at least operating in the engine temperature range.

Is any damage being done to the trany be running cold?

p.s. trany seems to be running fine so far.

If you put the sensor before the coolers you'd see a more accurate reading.

yeah i would want a reading of the trans fluid right after leaving the trans and before it hits the coolers for an accurate reading. I have heard that anything over 175 degree temps is when trans fluid really starts to break down and thus putting wear on transmissions so yeah i like to keep my trans fluid right around 150-160 and those temps are from inside the pan. On really hot summer days i have seen my trans temps get up to about 168-170 and thats with 2 ext coolers.

Where is the sensor installed? If the temps are from the pan you are fine, unless you are way up North (when trans temps drop below 0F or so).
