Can you remove engine without a lift??? I am doing a block swap on my 2001 WS6, but I lack a car lift. I know that the easiest way to access the engine is to drop it out from the bottom. Can this be done with large jack stands (30" clearance)? What about removing from the top? What about a forklift (long forks obviously)? I would like to hear from anyone that has done this type of work. Any help would be much appreciated!!!!

2 ways of doing the Motor without a lift...
do it out the top - it can be done, but its a pain in the *** and will take a lot more time
do it out the bottom - just need to be able to drop the k-member with the engine and transmission(properly supported on jackstands and blocks so it cant move).. then you can use and engine hoist to lift the car off of the k-member..you have to get the car's front end pretty high in the air, but its not a big deal and lots of people have done it that way...
basically like this...

I did mine twice through the bottom. You'll be amazed at how easy it is this way. Do yourself a favor and buy a mover's dolly, I got mine for about $40. It will make things so much easier when it comes time to lining up the k-member bolts and just moving the k-member around in general. I wouldn't even attempt it without one...

did mine like sound engineer did his i put the rear on jack stands it gave me a little more clearance on the hoist it was easy and took maybe 3-4 hours and i was stoping and starting a good bit

I've done it both ways, and out the bottom is the way to go, but if you pull the heads off in the car the shortblock comes right out. The only time I pulled one out the top was because I thought I could fix it, but got the heads off and realized the piston had a hole in it, at that point out the top is pretty easy.

i took mine out this year, i didn't have an engine hoist or a dolly. i took off the front bumper and bumper support and jacked the car up hella high in the front and left the *** on the ground, with the front bumper off i left the front tires on and dragged it out by the sway bar. with the front bumper off it's easier to get the shock towers out

Anyways I always done through the top. NOT a huge PITA, I do not have to worry about bleeding brakes or getting a realignment which is needed. Your going to spend time either way. I guess it depends on your level of involvement.
One thing the bottom does is help not have to worry about disconnecting the trans as I have always done that. A4 cars are easier, T-56 need to be pulled right out.
