Default Hot Rod tested 8 ported LS3/L92 heads!

Did anyone see the article in Hot Rod where they tested 6 different ported OEM heads, a Pro Comp head and a Mast head?

In the test was OEM ported heads by LPE, WCCH, SDPC, TEA, Pro Comp, GMPP. There were also aftermarket castings by Pro Comp and Mast.

All tested on a 466 with a PI carb intake, pump gas, hyd roller cam, peak power was 762 hp, the Mast heads were the hands down winner, but also have 12 degree valve angles and 1.8 rockers, as opposed to 15 degree with 1.7 rockers.

It's a good read, check it out.

Yes its the FEB 2011 issue. On a side note it was a 468 ci w/12.2 to 1 comp and a comp cam >> 255/271 deg with .624 lift on 115 lsa .It also made 732 with a /FAST 102 intake .
The article also showed where the factory balancer came apart while they where testing at 7,000 rpm.

Sorry, yes, 468, 4.185" bore x 4.25" stroke

The spread between the best and worst of the ported OEM heads was 8 hp, or about 1%, that seems close to the repeatability of the dyno to me.

Read the last Hot Rod article about the cathedral port heads on 408, good comparison.

I found the first comparison to be a bust. With the 408 restricted by the fast there was very little difference in horsepower among the various submisions. The highest performing heads were the couple that had a slightly smaller combustion chamber. However, this go-round HRM upped the ante and tested the heads with a single plane intake. They essentially removed the restricter plate from the motor. This allowed the aftermarket heads to shine over the ported castings. It would have been interesting to have seen how the cathederal heads performed with a supervictor. Likewise, I would guess that the ported LS3's would have performed closer to the Mast heads had they all been tested with the Fast 102 this time.

I bet they would be in the 8hp spread.

That being said, go with the most budget head that fits your applications needs.

As long as Richards heads arent way behind comparable heads Ill always use WCCH for my ported head needs. He has treated me great every time Ive bought something from him, and taken all the time I needed to answer any questions Ive had. Best customer service Ive ever had the pleasure of dealing with.

From that article, I didn't think that the two GM production heads would perform that great, sorry for anyone who hasn't seen the article yet.

I just bought that magazine yesterday. I bought it because on the cover it had "america's hottest engine swap" being the LS series of motors. I didn't even know that they had a comparison like this in there. Guess I have to get to reading!
