Default How can I make my seats go back further? (found a solution! Seat mod!)

Ok, after doing quite a bit of searching i found another thread that suggested modifying the rail to allow the seat to slide further back.

I didn't have the right tools to do this correctly but it turned out ok after some work. I did not remove the rails. I drilled a hole on one of the sides of the raised part. Once that's done they're pretty easy to bend, so i just took a screwdriver and a hammer and bent them down and broke them off pretty cleanly.

Once those raised parts are removed you'll get a good 1/2 inch to 3/4 more travel.

To get another 1/2 inch to 3/4 you need to trim the black trim around the rail so the rail can extend pass them as poorly illustrated in the picture below.

When you're looking at your seat i think you will understand how to trim it to allow the rail to extend past it.

How tall are you? My friend is 6'5" and he says leg room is ok in my car. He just hits his head on the headliner couple times getting in and out.

I have wondered this myself. I do know that the older 82-92 seats go back farther, unless its just the dash thats takes up more room.

Anyone? It seems the only option would be aftermarket seats which I'd never spend that much money on. :/

Common sense? That and it'll hit the back seat way before coming off the track.

so you have verified the seat will have something to lock into still? or are yours electric?

mine are manual so I pull the lever, slide back til it clicks into place. thus my question.

i ask cause if this works I would do this. mine could really stand to go back one or two more clicks.

This is for power seats. Manual seats you'd probably have to get a different track rail or relocate the bolt holes or something.

Just got back from testing it out. Got at least an inch more! I found out that there's a flat plastic spot on the left to rest your foot, never noticed that before!

I ended up trimming the black trim that covers the rails so it could slide out even more. I didn't have time to take pictures, i wish i did. But it's pretty self explanatory.

I'm very satisfied with this mod!

I'm 6'4" and leg room isn't that bad. It's tolerable. But head room on the other hand lol. I nearly rip my head off getting in and out sometimes.

Pontiac guys are the only ones that I've noticed that complain of leg room. This mainly is to blame for the huge dash they have compared to the Camaro's.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm 6'2'' and I don't even need my seat to be set all the way back in my car, but I've seen many threads about leg room and needing more room, and every person who starts that thread has a Pontiac in their signature.

I'm 6'3.5" and my camaro has plenty of room. I think 94CamaroZ28 is right though. I drove my buddies 01 TA, and the leg room pissed me off. He's 6'5" and complains about it all the time. He also said my camaro was better when he drove it, so there is probably something to that.

Weird, I'm 6'6" and I don't have any issues, but I do have the power adjustable seats, all the way back and all the way down and I have plenty of room, I do wish our steering wheels could telescope, I feel far away from the wheel often

aren't those notches a safety precaution, in case you engage in a car accident?

im glad I found this thread. I cant wait to do this to mine. This is the main thing I cant stand about my 99TA. I never really noticed it until my daily driver took a crap early last summer and i had to use my ta as a DD for a few months. I used to love the car but I only drove it once in a while. Driving it everyday I ended up HATING it. It got to the point where I was seriously thinking about selling it. Main thing was that I felt cramped in it. If I had a gym shoe with a thick sole or a dress shoe on it would make it even worse. I would always wear my flattest shoes and bring other shoes if needed.

I think there are a few things as to why some tall ppl feel cramped and some dont. Theres more too it than just your overall height. Im 6'2" but I all leg. my Gf is 5'10" and when we sit down she is at the same height as me or taller. For our minimal height difference I cant believe when I drive her car how far she has the seat up. Its cuz our difference in height is all in the legs.

I think another thing is whether your car is stick or auto. It seems like with an auto you can get into a position and kinda stay there. Stick you are using both legs all the time. I also think there may be something between camaro and ta's. I never felt cramped in my 99 camaro which was an auto. Could be a combo of the both.

I also think some cars/seats vary. I had a 00 ws6/auto in my shop yesterday with the same seats as mine and it felt even more cramped than my car. I remember back in the day...I had a 91 mustang and my friend had the same car but 93...same exact seats and all. both stick. We both agreed his felt like it had more room. It was weird.

I cant wait to do this mod and drive my car this spring. my arms are also super long. sometimes it feels like im reaching in the back seat for the shifter. pulling into second gear feels awkward.
