I think the 12 bolt is not much heavier than the 10 bolt. A dana60 has 30 lbs on a 10 bolt. Weight really shouldnt be a concern in a rear. That is where you want weight anyway IMO.

if anyone is concerned about weight then a fabbed rear should be the only thing they should consider then.... and that to me is a waste of money to shave .1 second off a 1/4 time.

I can see a need if you have an all out race car and you are trying win money every weekend

Thanks for the replys guys. I am asking more for handling purposes. Unsprung weight must be controlled by the shocks/springs and more weight negatively affects handling.

My 10 bolt is shot and I don't want to fix it and polish a turd but at the same time I don't want to add any more unsprung weight than I have too.... I know about the midwest Fab 9" but the budget does not allow it....

unsprung was one thing I am trying to avoid with my new MWC 9".. I don't think the 12 bolt is 30lbs heavier than a 10 bolt, more like 15. Then the Dana 60 another 15-20 on top of that. You don't need a D60 for your setup. Get a 12 bolt if you want gear whine or wish for a miracle that they don't.

When I weighed my stock 10-bolt and the S60 I replaced it with, there was a 32lb difference, and that is with a 3.55 gearset, Power-Lock posi and the S/T axles... A Strange 12-bolt I weighed compared to another stock 10-bolt was 21lbs difference...

Builds between setups will vary as well... so there is some varience... But I have dead-lifted all three rears putting them in and there isn't so much weight it would make that much of a difference... Out of the three the S60 is by far the beefiest... I still don't understand why people go with 9" rears when the S60 is a perfect fit without any issues... And don't start on the torque-arms, as with virtually any aftermarket rear you run into issues, so nothing new or unique to the S60 there...

I do know, back in the early days of the S60, you had a whole bunch of 9" vendors spreading false rumors and such about the S60, not surprisingly because it cut into thier 9" sales too much...

I realize there is some variation, but why doesnt anyone seem to have the exact weights of these housings/complete axles.

Ive searched heavily and cant come up with total weights.
Would also like to know what the stock 10 bolt total weight is.

And yes, weight is very important. Do a 2-3+ things to cut some weight and you're gonna notice it.

different carriers, gear sets, yokes, cases may all have slightly different weights in the 10 bolt, 9" or any other RE so your not going to get exact differences. I believe the 9" housing with an aluminum case will should be the closest to the 10 bolt weight. the cast centers on the 12 bolt and S60 have to add some some weight I would think over plate steel.

That is not true at all, we have no issues with our torque arm set up on our MWC housing.

Here is a good thread also.

Our housing with an aluminum case and a spool is lighter than a stock 10 bolt.

Very good to know. Do you happen to know what an average 9" iron case weigh? What does an Aluminum case weigh?

But, you are talking about a 1-option torque arm setup that they have to purchase along WITH the rear end... ie, they are paying for it, and if they already had an existing one they wouldn't need to buy another one with other rear end options...

I don't like being locked to a single solution... even though yours is integrated and quite nice, it is still more costly than if someone went with a S60 and already had any number of torque arms that work with it already... Hell, I have a S&W Racecars torque arm setup on the S60 in my T/A...

Regardless of how much a person reads, searches or talks it comes down to this...

Cheap....Light.....Strong

You only get to pick two of the above.

I dont know what you used to weigh these rears but I would believe the info in this post. It seems about right https://ls1tech.com/forums/gears-axl...hey-weigh.html

I can say the torque arm setup on my MWC rear has no issues & is really superior to how it mounts to the rear end housing than any other rear made for these cars. Thats just one of the things that sold me. The 12 bolt rear is a good example, in any other configuration except the torque arm mount the 12 bolt is a very strong rear. The S60 is a great rear but it weighs the most, & it doesnt have the flexiblilty of removeable center section like the 9 inch does.

But, you are talking about a 1-option torque arm setup that they have to purchase along WITH the rear end... ie, they are paying for it, and if they already had an existing one they wouldn't need to buy another one with other rear end options...

Theres a real easy solution to the torque arm, sell the one you have & it will just about offset the extra cost & you get a fab 9 with a bad *** torque arm setup thats definitely an upgrade to what you already have.

That's why we off these three Carl.

Inexpensive.....Light....Strong

We do not do cheap here at all on anything but we do keep the budget in mind and why we try to keep our prices down with out using "cheap" material.

I had the weights written down some were but can not find them, I will try to get some time to weigh them today.

Here is some other weights you need to take in mind as well.
35spl spool 8.4 pounds. Now this is the spool we use, others have weighed in at more.

35spl locker 14.8 pounds. Again this is the locker we use from Yukon, others could weigh in less or more.

Here is some info for the past and present 35spl Wavetrac users. Old wavetrac weighed in at 15 pounds and the MK2 weighs in at 17.2 pounds.

The 31spl Billet clutch posi we use weighs in at 20.2 pounds and the 31spl Truetrac we use weighs in at 16.4 pounds. Different manufactures will have different weights.
