not a turbo guru, but i hear factory pistons are on borrowed time with pretty much any kind of boost...

"Stock LT1" and "turbo" do not belong in the same sentence. Your plan will not work.

The words "turbo" and "LT1" could be in the same sentence with "$15,000 budget" though.

Boosted lt1 ran 7psi for 2 years until his TURBO failed. I think with a good tune it's doable. Is it safe? Nope.

The best turbo for a stock lt1 is the one that came on it stock.

Car has 85k miles. I want to rebuild and forge but I wanna have fun and turbo it with very little boost until it pops. Just tryin to have a fun street car for a little bit to drive on sundays until my pockets get fatter and I do it right. Not thinkin im building a bulletproof racecar with 1900 bucks...

If your budget is $1900, I would do ALL bolt ons first. And 1900 bucks will be cutting it close.

Ive read this somewhere on here once, and props to who ever said it, not trying to steal it.

A- What you think it will cost to build
B- 30 or 40% of A
C- Final cost
A+B=C

Hows that? People are putting 150-200 shot of nitrous but he can't run a messily 7 lbs of boost from a turbo might i add. Turbos/superchargers are much easier on a motor than nitrous ever thought of being.

I always like hearing what you have to say RamAir, but like we all know positive influence is always better than negitive.

Now i do agree that he shouldn't do it with only $1900. That is just asking for problems.

There is a difference between telling someone that they can't do it, and that they shouldn't do it.

to OP:
You shouldn't attempt this endeavor unless you have extensive knowledge of how turbos work and the correct applications to work from. Like someone stated start small like bolt-ons and work your way up. Your plans may change...

It's always best to start with a good foundation to build upon....

Thanks for positive feedback. I just want to mention once again that this is gonna be a fun experiment until it pops. Im perfectly aware that im asking for problems however I just wanted n e knowledge of the ideal turbo in a best case scenario situation. Im gonna boost it or spray her as long as I can then its comin out and gettin built. Any suggestions are appreciated!

Save your 1900 and put it towards the new build

Get the LE2 H/C package with that money right now and start collecting parts for the build

good Fuel management, tune and 5-7 psi will be fun and safe. the trans will prob let go first. (like mine did) as far as turbo size? ask in the F.I. forum for better help .. turbo size would also be a factor in location of turbo i.e. front mount or butt mount .. having an intercooler would also promote longer life of the engine.(and IMO a necessity) i DD'd an eBay PTK clone turbo kit on a 99 T/A ..even drove to Texas and back to Florida on it running 8-9 psi with no probs .

A PSI number doesn't have **** to do with it. 7 psi on a tiny T3 40mm turbo isn't the same as 7psi on a GT55 is it... No of course not because the CFM.of airflow between the two is vastly different.

Cylinder Pressure is what will kill the stock parts, plain and simple. I don't care how good the tune is... Cylinder pressure is what makes power.

Boosting a stock LT1 and hoping it lives at 400hp is rediculous to me when you can do heads / cam / spray and it will make 100hp more and be safer.

I'd spend the $1900 on a good forged rotating assembly because unless you can weld or know someone who can I don't think you'll get everything you need to build your turbo kit.

I have a rearmount with a Master Power T76 it is well sized, reasonably priced and will handle ~600 rwhp and be fine for 7 psi and ~425 rwhp.

You do NOT need or want a large cam for a turbo street driver, a stock aluminum cam is fine for T76. Stock crank is STOUT so low dollar build is forged pistons with stock rods, stock heads/cam and shoot for 9:1. Balance the assembly get an fmic and have some fun. The stock crank should hold to 550 rhp with forged pistons (friend is running 600 with this type setup).

I'd go either high impedance 60 or even 83 lb injectors they are fine with LT1 ecm. Better to have enough injector I have I think 60 in the rearmount and 93 on my drag car with stock ecm

The stock pistons have no margin for detonation with boost, if you get forged pistons the 4l60E will be the weak link

Good luck

The guy up top is right about the psi. It's relative to ur setup....as far as tune.....if its spot on ur fine. People will argue....ive seen tunes save pistons and kill rods first. Either way like I said b4 its doable. And for someone to say going fi is dumb bc u can do it na, is ridiculous. In today economy who what's a head and cam dd sucking has when u can go fi, have the ability to grow with power, and still get good gas mileage. N/A cars confuse me now.....unless u only have the money to slowly mod **** N/A

The best example of a boosted stock LT1 is the Brutespeed Formula, running 10s with 9 psi. If you really want to be safe run around 6lbs. You can run an STS system or frontmount, for you id say STS. However for 1900 you are dreaming. The injectors, wastegate and BOV are going to be around 6-800, the turbo around 600. So you are at 1400. You still need a turboworx oil pump, oil lines, and piping.
