I want to install a 4l60E behind my 5.3 in my 64 nova. My question is there a particular 4L60E i should be looking for? I was told to look for a 2000+ core to build. That way i would not have any bolt issues and converter issues. I was told the length of the bell housing changed so i could cause converter/flexplate issue if I get a pre 2000? I would love to get a 4L65/70 but the cores are hard to come buy for a good price. Also if I use a older one do i need to change flex plate or buy spacer? i have no issues with tapping the block for the additional bolt for the older style.

Or maybe a 4L80E?

Pretty much any 4L60E will work. The specific LS style have a removable bellhousing. Those are the ones that have everything correct for your converter and flexplate. Beware the S10/truck 4.3 4L60E's because they look the same but have a different converter. Spot those by having no 12 o'clock bolt hole in the bellhousing

Using an older 4L60E just requires the older trans adapter spacer thing. Get a new one with bolts from GM for about $50. You can use either the LS dished flexplate with elongated holes and the adapter on the rear to catch the converter nub or use an older flat flexplate with the spacer between the crank and flexplate

I thought the 5.3 pre 2000 didnt have the 12 clock bolt hole either? Yet they still have removable bellhousing. I could be wrong though. I just need to off load my 700R4 and get a 60 asap. I think they also have a 4l60e HD that has the same converter and output as the 4l65e?

So basicly if it has removable bellhousing it will work with no mods? Or only if it has bolt hole at 12 clock position?

And if I go older 4l60e (years?) in need to elongate the hole on my current flywheel and buy spacer.? Or change to older flywheel and put spacer behind fly wheel?

Sorry for so many questions.

greasmonkeychef please don't try to drill the extra hole for the tranny. I've been told you will be drilling into a water jacket.I was thinking the samt thing an someone told me this bob

beware of any 4L60E which is older than 1995 as they DO NOT have pulse width modulated torque converters.

Here is my tranny, I am trying to find out if it came from the same truck that the engine came from. I did not took the engine out my self, it was out when I got the engine. The tranny had a yellow mark like the marks they out on them when you buy it from the junkyard, so I do not know if it is the original. The serial number that I found under the tranny behind the oil pan is GCBD311J16157327, I try goggle for got no results, I got more cocern after reading this thread where they mention the 12 oclock botl hole, since my tranny does not have it.

Yeah, I am dealing with the same issue. I have a 2005 LH6 and unsure if there are signfiicant variations in transmissions between 1998-2009. The transmission rebuilders in my area wont even talk to me unless I have a 4L60e of the same year as the engine. I've pretty much resigned myself to buying a rebuilt unit online.

Also, to answer the first poster about the 4L80e. They are heavy, and will have more parasitic losses in the drivetrain. I considered the 4l80e because, strangely enough, they are easy to find, but discarded that for my jeep cause it was overkill.

I think starting in 98, all 4l60's have the removable bellhousing. The splines on the input shaft are different between the V8 and V6 trans. It's been awhile since I've about the differences. When I rebuild my V6 trans, I'm going to put the V8 parts in, so it'll work with my LM7 5.3L

The vin for the engine should/could be laser etched on the top lip of the trans b/h, dr side. You can tell if the engine/trans are matched that way. The # should also be etched on the vertical edge of the block, behind the filter area.

A rebuilder that won't do your trans unless it matches the engine?????? Is he smoking something??
05/60E's should have the 5 gear planet, etc.
A good rebuilder can use the hd bushings, Vette servo, hd band, weld the sun shell, etc., and make a reliable trans for not a lot of $$...
You can use a Trailblazer converter and pick up some stall speed.
There are different length bolt-on b/h's..Beware of this if you use a different trans for mocking up the mounts.

All LSx 4L60E's have the 12 o'clock hole

i used 99, 4.3 S-10 4L60E and bolted it to a 6.0.
Used a 5.3 Flexplate and elongated the holes slightly to line up to the converter. That was suggested by Hughes Performance.

Well I sold my 700R4 last night. So now I am on the hunt for a 4L60/65/70. I believe any of these will work with the 5.3? I would prefer to find a low mileage trans and have few hundred to through towards headers. Time will tell.

So the tranny on my pictures is from a late 90's. Here is a picture of the flywheel, you can see 2 of the holes are a little elongated. The flywheel has a TU2150 number on it, does that mean anything.

74novacustom, this tranny was attached to the engine, so I should ne able to use it, correct, the flexplate was bolted to the converter, or should I get a new flexplate.

I remove the converter from the tranny and it has a stamp of month, day and year, I forgot the month and day but the year is 1996. Can I use a converter from a later 4L60E tranny.
