Valve springs are usually about an hr labor if i recall, and another 2-3 for the cam itself.

Down here a cam job is 1500 plus parts. (so 15 hours)

I'm considering having a cam put in; I spoke to a local company this morning (Tick Performance) and was quoted roughly $2k. I haven't received the breakdown in writing yet so I may be mistaken. But my understanding was that this price included the cam, various related parts (including timing chain), installation + tuning.

That seems the most logical pricing. What are tuners aroud the country charging? $450? Cam $400, related parts, maybe $400, then labor at $100/hr. If any shop is charging more than 8 hours for a basic install, then people need to find another shop. A good shop can probably do it in 5 hours.

I've been quoted around 2500 at local shops and that includes parts, (cam, rods, springs, timing chain, tensioner)

It's not about how fast the shop tech can do it, it's what the "book time" for the job is.
Around here the average for a cam install with springs is 10 hours or about $900 in labor.

So to the OP, I think we can all agree that including parts, $2-3k is probably not a bad deal depending on the parts included.

I paid 1800 for a custom cam, melling HV oil pump, patriot gold springs, hardened pushrods, ls2 timing chain and thats installed with an oil change and gaskets.

It costs too much, do it yourself. There are plenty of write-ups online. The guide I first followed was the ls1howto - same as CancerJCC posted. In the V you don't even have to disconnect the AC condensor, I just slid mine done. If you have a vavle spring compressor and normal hand tools, all you will need is dowel rods to hold the lifters up( $3 at home depot or $65 from Thunder Racing) and a new crankshaft balancer bolt($6 ebay). DO NOT reuse the same balancer bolt, they are torque to yield and will back out on you.
