My water pump gasket has had a small leak since I've owned my car. Yesterday I removed the pump, cleaned the matting surfaces, installed new gaskets and torqued everything to spec, However now my leak seems worse. Should I just re-install gaskets again with silicone even though they do not call for it? The matting surface of the pump does seem to seal well. If so, hich kind of silicone should I use?

Or should I just get a new pump? The pump feels good to turn by hand, however I cannot find a weep hole or a place for it to leak when they go bad? It only appears to leak from the gaskets (See Pics).

My pump is not original, I believe it is the newer style pump whose thermostat separates from the thermostat housing. Anyone know when they started making this style pump?

GM Gaskets were on the pump when I removed it.

i try to use GM whenever i can............cheap insurance

Use a flat edge and make sure your mating surfaces are flat...I usually use a yellow or white 3m plastic finger disc to clean up surfaces without worrying about damaging the aluminum

I always use RTV on the water pump with gaskets, never had a leak... I thought it was called for. I use the black permatex from your local parts store.

I cleaned the matting surfaces pretty well, but I guess it just wasn't good enough.

Funny thing is I was going to put RTV sealant on it however the small unopened tube I had was totally dried up inside, so I ended up not using any.

Do the types of RTV sealant matter for the water pump application? black, blue, or red.

Isn't red a higher temperature?

i used the GM gaskets............and some of that red tack stuff to hold them in place........NO leaks

Ive used GM gaskets 4 times. installed em dry, and havent seen a drop. Did you torque them to 22 ft/lbs (IIRC)?
