So I have an old rich guy at work. Has a couple 9" rears laying around. He has a 9" rear wtih 31 spline axles he said I can have for $75. What all do I need to do to make this work in my Trans Am. I currently am N/A with about 450 HP. I have a pipe dream of running about 7 psi of boost. Obviously I have to get this narrowed, but where do I get the correct brackets from.

Is the case and center section ok for me to use in my trans am or do I need to buy a whole new setup?

there is a guy on ebay who sells 9" housings for $950 ready to bolt into an f body, maybe if you ask him really nicely he will share his template with you... Google it and you might be able to find a template online though.

Or you could just take the guts out of your $75 9" and buy the $950 housing and be done with it.

Why would they NOT be sufficient? When you order the new housing just make sure it is the same width.

You'll need to check and see if it is a posi, 31 spline trac lock will be good for you the weak link would be the stock ford casing. I have a truck 9inch with 10 bolt perches and back plates I can get measurements off it for you if you want.

after thinking for a few minutes, just pull your 10 bolt and get the measurements directly from the source... measure the shock, trailing arm and sway bar attachment points from the yoke center, then determine if you need to narrow or widen the housing from there. I don't see why the stock housing wouldn't work for most anything. There were a few different versions made by ford, not to mention the after market. The "WAR" cases seem to be popular and any case with an N (nodular iron) stamped in the housing above the yoke is a good bet for strength.

I used the brackets from the 10 bolt. Cut them off and rewelded to the Ford 9 axle tubes.

The torque arm bracket can be purchased from different sources.
Moser sells the housing ends so you can reuse your existing disc brake setup.

That would be great along with a Tape Measure in some photos showing the locations of everything. Is your set-up narrowed or full width?

I just picked up a used 9" housing and axles for $83 bucks and as soon as I get home (3 weeks away) I want to start working on it.

I think moser sells the brackets you would need.look at a moser rear and have some one weld the parts on to make it work.

Local Fab guy told me Moser won't sell it seperate because they want to sell you the housing.

thanks for all the help guys. i'm sorry i'm just a newbie when it comes to rear ends. this rear is not a nodular and he told me it would have to be narrowed. my questions are:

will the case be strong enough?
is it better to buy new axles or have them shortened and resplined?
can i buy the brackets for the spring mount, control arms and torque arm or do I need them cut off of my 10 bolt?
do i have to buy bearings or do they come with the differential?
besides getting the brackets, differential, ring & pinion, axles what else do i need to buy?

I'm trying to learn quick because my car needs a rear and I also have a local guy who builds these for $1800. I'm thinking though using this other guys housing i can do it even cheaper. If only i knew what I was doing.

Midwest Chassis will sell a kit for $300 although I have no idea what is included as I have never seen any photos and/or a list of parts posted anywhere.

Like I said I would be most worried about a stock ford case. Hollo I think is his name was telling me how he cracked his junkyard center section he pulled from another car.

Buy new axels.

The perches and lower control arm brackets will need to be welded on. You need to buy some relocation brackets for the LCA (cheap). The spring perches will need to be cut from the 10-bolt.

The end plates that the brake backing plates will need to be cut off the 10-bolt and welded to the 9 inch axle tubes as well.

First you would need to fab up the mounts for the springs, lca, and torque arm. Weld up the end plates. Drill and tap you a drain plug in the bottom of the housing (cheap and easy and totally worth it). Then your ready to get your center section.

You best bet for the center section (or 3rd member) is to just buy one assembled from a sponsor. Then after you have that you can measure for your custom axles and get your bearings at the same time. Then put that bitch in the car.

Don't forget you'll need a torque arm too, the stock one is a POS.

For all the work that goes into it, if your paying someone to do the fab work it will cost about that same as a prefabbed one from MWC, Moser, or Quick Performance.

Fwiw I exploded a stock Ford case with stiff wall ET drag slicks and a STOCK LS1. Just because its any old 9" doesn't mean that it's an indestructible beast of a rear end.

Cool Story, I told one of the Curries (I can recall which one) that I had 4-Detroit Lockers for a Dana 60 for 40 Spline Axles. He told me that they dont make them! I said I got them and I will bring them by. He ended up buying all 4 from me! They were Custom Made for an off road racing team and believe it or not, they kept blowing them up so they sold their stock and went to a Spool! I have always wondered if they had sold them by now as this was 10 years ago. I guess I will be stopping by again as it is going to cost me $300 for Midwest Chassis's kit, I might as well pay $50 in labor to get Currie to do it for me!

so I then have a guy who will build me a rearend for $1800 from a ford 9". He machines his own 31 spline axles which i would think woudl be fine for me. However he uses a Yukon differential. Anyone ever heard of this? is it any good?
