Default LT1 oil changes

So I usually change my oil to Kendall Titanium GT-1 (5W-30 full Synthetic) every 3000miles but always knew 3000 was just a marketing thing to take your money. I used royal purple once and all I can say its a waste of money. I like it when my oil is gold and not black. lol My question is what motor oil do you guys use and how often are your changes?

Cheap *** NON-synthetic Castrol GTX 20w50......took my 427ci to 173,000 miles.......

All my friends over the past 10 years were lucky to get 40,000-50,000 out of their stroker engines using synthetic garbage.......

All synthetic oils are a complete waste of money....all of them. They are 100% unnecessary....synthetic oil is the biggest scam on the public.....Only engines that might need synthetic would be specific built very specific tolerance race engine that the builder says to use.

LSx engines are absolutely NOTHING special at all, they are regular V8 engines.....this is what people have to realize first, and most don't. They think these engines are magical, super-duper high tech.......they're not.

Wow lots of negativity lol. Off topic but now you have the new LTx's coming out so you dont have to worry about LSX's and dont you have an LS engine? I wonder why you hold a grudge against LSX's. I can agree with you about synthetic being a waste but I guess it helps when I abuse my car daily!

Why was this thread moved? It has to do with maintenance not a LT1 tech thread!

well it's here now

Conventional oil here, changed every 3000 max, with either a K&N or mobile 1 oil filter.

personally would never use synthetic unless it was ran in the engine from day one (excluding break-ins and rebuilds bla bla bla)

You do not speak of the second oldest lt1 outside our designated area! I change mine every third trip to the track. 100 miles round trip. I go to the track six or so times a year so that's aprox 2 oil changes a year. Thats all I use my car for now other than the occasional trip to hooters or publix.

I usually get whatever synthetic oil is on sale- Mobil1, Pennzoil, or Castrol. I can't complain about regular oils though. I had 287,000 on the 305 in my Monte when I pulled the motor for the big block and it was running fine. I had around 350,000 on the 302 in my Mustang with no problems. Neither ever saw a drop of synthetic. Keep up with the maintenance and don't abuse them constantly and they'll last a long time.

OP -

I use whatever name brand oil is on sale and change it every 2,000 miles.

2,000 miles because my turbo blackens my oil quicker than when I was N/A, so I don''t take any chances.

I use kendall 5-30 synthetic blend, and champion lab filters(firestone house brand). Usually don't make it 3000 miles between, I usually change it every 3 months regardless of miles.

Why is it a bad thing if you switch from synthetic to conventional? I always heard once you go synthetic you never go back. Am I going to cause more engine wear if i save money by going conventional? I always wondered why they say that. I use to think it was just a way to get more money out of you.

Synthetic to conventional should never cause an issue. You just have to keep up with your oil changes more than with some synthetics.

In a nutshell, IMO all modern conventional's can now properly protect. Now if you have an old beat up engine, (like an abused lt1) and decided to use synthetic after it's been running conventional all its life, it can cause the seals to start leaking. Your engine had problems before the oil (the oil didn't destroy the engine per say) but the synthetic oil will usually be the breaking point. I experienced this first hand. That's why from reading and my own experience I will use conventional and be prompt with oil changes every 3K with conventional. And IMO the biggest thing people over look is the filter. Spend the money on a good one.
