Cool DIY Harness,need wiring instructions.

I have an '88 Chevy 1500 4x2 longbed daily driver(TBI). I also have complete ls6 swap with auto trans that I want to put in my truck due to gas mileage on worn out 5.7(350,000miles). I have factory wiring harness from the '01 SS automatic. Better to send off harness and pay $400 or get complete new for $700? I also need a computer, someone robbed it. I'm really wanting to do this myself and would greatly appreciate any help on this matter. I also have HPTUNERS.

AWESOME....there is an LS1 GOD. 1 Ok,how much for a computer or should I track 1 down in the junk yard and what should I get? Not sure if I saw where you mentioned that.2 Does the diy kit instructions tell me what extra wires to dispose of (on my harness theres not a bunch anyway)? 3 This truck is TBI so is it best to do upgraded intank pump or inline the best option for me (returnless if possible)?I could attach inline where factory hardline fuel filter is and run braided from there up to motor. 4 Fan wiring would be a must, dont like those silly little controllers (have had them fail before)rather let computer do that function. Where are you located? Thanks for your guidedance...

I second that, I got all my info from lt1swap.com(if he's reading this a big thanks). I did my harness in a sunday afternoon. I think after buying the fuse panel, ends, wire loom, cold beverage!!! I was into for under $50. I still need to send my computer to him to have the vats removed . Bob

You can do it yourself if you have an ohm meter and basic knowledge 60$ materials roughly. We also have a few forum sponsers on here that do some kickass work. Wiring is one thing you don't want to skimp on because it will leave you stranded or extremely confused down the road. I consider myself fairly tech savvy and can trace wiring really well, But time to time I still rely on our sponsers and other gear heads on this website for assistance. Good luck with the build and make sure to document it!!!

Thanks Randy.Every where I search for instructions, there are roadblocks because of the money side of wiring.I do have wiring experience, just not a huge billfold.I have also built a couple LS1 motors that scream....I love LS stuff...people just stingy.Lol. If I can make my first harness I will learn from there and everything in my yard will be LS powered.

BP Auto - Thanks for providing more info on your DIY kits. These seem geared toward people modifying existing harnesses.

Can you give some more detail on this?

Is this leads/pigtails coming off the fuse / relay block or is this wire for some other purpose?

I'd like to find a good "kit" of GM harness colored wires in a reasonable length, maybe like 6-10ft of each common color.

BP-Automotive.....you rock. This is exactly what I have been looking for. I would like to know if I order the $150 diy kit,how long does it take before I receive it,as in do you have to make it up or do you have the harnesses made up ready to ship? You have helped to relight my fire to get going on my project, daily driver truck. This motor is stock.I have a LS2 bored 70 over with stock crank and H beam rods with billet pistons(377ci) that is ready to put together if I can just find a deal on some stock LS3 heads and intake.

That looks like the same kit I have seen elsewhere for $125. Are you just buying it and reselling it?

GM is also the company that didn't paint the inside of Vega body panels and built millions of cars in the 60's and 70's grounding loads to body panels instead of spending the few extra bucks to run ground wires around to everything. I think the phrase "planned obsolescence" was coined with them in mind. I've worked as an engineer long enough to know that production decisions are often made by a different set of criteria than what we engineers recommend. You would be amazed why some things end up the way they do.

I agree with what you are saying and would like to complement you for sharing what is undoubtedly hard earned experience. If I was in the market for harness stuff you would be one of the guys I would look at.

But the comment "GM did it this way" only goes so far with me. Any company being run by Obama obviously made some poor choices along the way.
