Default The eternal question of whether or not to jump ship...

Have an opportunity to buy a low mile 5.3 for $300, a harness and t56 computer from a 99 for $250, and a 99 intake with fuel rails for $100, and I'm torn.

If I could sell my t56 for $1000, and the rest of my lt stuff for another $1000, then pick up an ls t56 for $1300, I'd come up about even, and if I did an ls9 cam at the same time I'd be 30hp ahead of where I am now with tons of potential. Or I could continue with my plan of just freshening up my lt with a cam doing it all myself for a learning experience and stay lt.

Thoughts?

You won't get 1000 not unless you sit on it. Its only a front cover and the input shaft that need to be changed. Keep your trans if it is fine.

If I had forseen what I put in to this engine I'm finishing now, I'd been LSx a long time ago. Once this is done and running, a 408 LSx is going on the stand for a build.

Basically "jumping ship" means going from tugboat to Scarab.

If you do jump ship, look for deals on everything. No need to speed big money on factory parts.

list is a little longer and costs more:

to convert lt1 t56 to ls1 t56 you need:
Bellhousing -100-150
Mid plate -150-200
Input shaft -200-250
LS7 Clutch w/flywheel 350
T/o bearing -200
~1000 more

For the engine you need, i won't quote prices you already have:

engine
wiring harness
intake
front fbody accessories -400
Fbody oil pan/pickup tube/windage tray 200-250
starter -30-50
cold air intake -50-150
411 pcm - 100
tune - 150
~500-700 more

for the chassis you need:

ls1 kmember -100
ls1 rack/pinion - 50
ls1 steering shaft -20

Depends on what you want out of the car in the long run. Friend of mine did the swap, has a 408 with all the street manners in the world and turns 127 through the traps at full weight. Car could easily be a daily driver. Doesn't launch for ****, but it was an auto, is now an M6 and has the wrong gear/tire combo.

411 pcm - HAVE

~500-700 more

for the chassis you need:

ls1 kmember -HAVE
ls1 rack/pinion - HAVE
ls1 steering shaft -HAVE [\QUOTE]

The trans is my biggest issue, which is why I figured I'd just sell mine and buy an ls t56 with clutch.

Only thing a LT1 has on a LS is slightly cheaper, and sounds a lot better.

LS is more reliable, efficient, more powerful, better aftermarket, lighter weight, and more availablity in junkyards ect.

Why did I go LT1 with my last build? Must be...

if you have a clean chassis and will keep the car for a while, i say do it. very rarely will you find a better known ls1 car done the way you want vs. converting your lt1 (if you have the money and time that is)

My chassis is about as clean as Taylor Swifts vagina. Yet it's like that old pair of soccer shorts you've had for 10 years that you always dig through the dirty laundry to find even when there are clean ones in your drawer. It's the favorite blue recliner that completely doesn't match the rest of your wife's furniture that you refuse to throw away or replace with a leather one.

The LS would be a throw on the recliner, a dry clean for the soccer shorts, and a big douche for T Swift.

There were only maybe three people arguing that. None of whom are in this thread.
