Default Need 400 hp. (camaro ss ls1)

Hi i just recently bought a 30k mile 2002 camaro ss motor trans pullout for a swap in an rx7 fd. I understand its more important to get power to the ground than peak numbers, but thats not what my question is about. What mods can i get to make 400hp? Preferably bolt-ons, but if internal work is needed that can be done too. Also keep the price down on the mods i just bought a motor!

Thanks

I am making just about 400 to the wheels with the mods in my sig I am pretty sure I would make 400 if I did a pull right now on a cool motor my motor was dumb hot when we did that pull.

Start Here.... STICKIES

And what is your definition of "keeping the price down"? Anything, bolt-on or internal, is going to cost some $$$$

you can pick up a cam and supporting mods for less than 1K that can get you there. Bolt ons will not quite reach 400 RWHP. but a cam and bolt ons will get there no problem!

Do you want 400hp at the motor or at the wheels? No way with bolt-ons are you gonna get 400rwhp unless you spray. I know the basic list of mods for most F-bodies is . . .

CAI ($200) [Fast Toys Ram Air/ Super Sucker]
Lid ($90) [Slp]
Ported TB ($65) [Spartan Performance]
Intake Manifold ($450-$750) [LS6 or FAST]
Long Tubes/ Y-pipe ($500-$1350) [Pacesetter or American Racing]
Cat Back ($450-$1,000) [Magnaflow or Corsa]
Underdrive Pulley ($200) [ASP or Slp]
Dyno Tune ($450) [Performance Shop]

Those are brand new prices and the companies are just examples. All those bolt ons should get you about 350-360ish at the wheels which is about 400 at the motor. Adding a cam to that list would get you at 400rwhp or higher depending on the cam specs. Cam packages, like from Thunder Racing go for about $699-$799 and include Springs and Push rods.

Just spray a 125 shot on the stock motor. That way it sounds stock, still strange coming from a FD but still stock sounding and you will surprise alot of people, lol.

But yeah, all motor wise, definitly need a cam and bolt ons.

sounds like a cam is a must...i was trying to avoid opening up the engine. I would rather not mess with spray and any cold air intakes and such will be custom since its in an fd. *****how much do you guys think I could get for the long block with 30k miles. (my thinking is just buy an ls2 long block.)

You won't get much for the LS1 longblock (unless you can pawn it off to a local 240sx) but the LS2 is easily an overall better platform to start with. I would reommend this if you are not in a hurry to get a running a car and if there exists a possibility of seeking >400whp in the future.

400whp is not going to happen w/ a bolton LS1.

Personally I would hope that would put me over the 400 mark. Since I know I should be able to get over 360 with a full bolt on m6 (maybe higher depending on tune?). I would like to see 420rwhp at least if I'm going to go as far as a cam. I'd also jump up and go with better flowing heads too if that was the route I was going with. Imo.

Its gonna be a pretty rough cam to get 420rwhp with just bolt ons and a cam but its possible.

The dyno below is of a 99 TransAm with stock unported cylinder heads, Thunder Racing's T-ReX v.2 camshaft, and a full package of bolt-on parts, including long tube headers, pulley, LS6 intake manifold, Whisper lid, ported throttle body. Dyno runs were on 93 octane gasoline and a factory steel flyweel.

And here's another dyno graph with a different cam. This dyno graph is of a 1999 LS1 TransAM with Thunder Racing 230/224, 111 lsa Camshaft with stock cylinder heads. Other mods include Grotyohann Long Tube headers, Whisper Lid, LS6 intake manifold, Thunder Racing ported throttle body, ASP Pulley, 12 bolt rear end w/ 4.30 gears and custom computer tuning. The "before" graph shown are with the same bolt-on modifications. The only things that were changed were the camshaft and the y-pipe was replaced with 6" collector extensions for dyno and track use.

My goal is 405rwhp-415rwhp and I'm doing the Cheatr Head and CAm Package from thunder racing. Its a small *** cam but I get over 400rwhp with stock idle and almost stock mpg. You won't get that with one of those wild cams but if thats what you like, do it.

I am pretty mechanical...i mean i have had my rotary out 3 times now but i have never been inside the ls1. If i torque everything back down to spec are there other major issues i can run into? If its a whole list don't even bother explaining it but if its just a matter of torque specs maybe i will throw in a cam and heads.

hahaha nvm guys i just thought about where the cam is located. All this time i was thinking rotary and that you would have to tear down the whole block.

like said before cam is a must. cam, exhaust, intake, and a good tune. You should get there. Make sure you have supporting mods for that cam and that they can take advantage of what the cam can do. With a low mile engine like that it should be easy.

I think I'm at about 360 with Lts, volant cold air, y pipe, catless. But I also have gmt suspension and droped a couple of pounds. My friend recently bought a 2000 ss with cam, Lts, lid, catless, and slp loud mouth exhaust, its been also dyno tuned the guy who sold it to him gave him the sheet. 365whp his is manual 80000m mine is auto140000. We raced twice once from 50mph. And from a dead stop he got the jump and I still beat him by about a car lenght. Any thoughts on that?
