Default TBSS intake or LS1 on 5.3???

I keep reading that the LS1 intake kinda sucks as far as factory intakes go, I have a TBSS intake off a 2006, it's not to ugly if you smooth down the ribs. But who cares anyways it's in a mustang anyways, is there a performance gain over the LS1 intake? Obviously there will be a low end torque increase but I may go FI later but either way which is better overall? Engine has the heads and cam from the TBSS installed as well what you guys think?

I hear truck intakes outperform LS1 intakes all the way through the rev range but LS6 intakes beat a truck intake in the upper rpms.

Going in a DD street car, convertible at that, so super high revs are few and far between.

While it is true that the LS6 just barely outperforms the truck intake that is the old Gen III style. The nnbs or tbss intake clearly outperforms both.

now thats the first time someone has said that it outperforms both to my kmowledge! with all the bracing and addition of the IRS in the rear I certainly could use the dded torque with a truck intake, as to appearances like I said its in my mustang so opening the hood either way I'm getting looked at sideways lol,

Keep in mind the comparisons between intakes is on a larger 5.7. On the smaller 5.3 with stock cam, you wont notice any difference.
I went with the LS1 for hood clearance, and because they only cost $35.

Anybody know if the tbss intake on a 5.3 will clear a stock hood on a second gen camaro?

There isn't just one truck intake. The 99-06 truck intakes are one style called nbs. These were outperformed by the ls6 intake up top. BUT there is also the 07+ nnbs truck intake aka 05+ trailblazer or tbss intake.....this one is way better than the 06 and older truck intakes and outperforms the ls6 intake everywhere

Hotrod compared several LS intakes dyno testing. Interesting read.

http://www.hotrod.com/articles/20-ls...ifolds-tested/

Stock LS6

eBay Price: $195 - I paid $400 a few months ago, price is higher than $195
Construction: Composite
Runner Length: 11.0 in
Throttle Opening: 2.960 in
Throttle-Body Size Tested: Accufab 78mm
Fuel Rail: Wilson Billet
Injectors: Holley 75 lb
Peak Power: 557 hp at 7,000 rpm
Peak Torque: 483 lb-ft at 5,000 rpm
Ave HP (3,000–7,000): 432.0 hp
Ave TQ (3,000–7,000): 450.9 lb-ft
TQ at 4,000 RPM: 454.3 lb-ft

Stock Trail Blazer SS
eBay Price: $210 note found one for $160 a month ago
Construction: Composite
Runner Length: 9.5 in
Throttle Opening: 3.45 in
Throttle-Body Size Tested: FAST 90 mm
Fuel Rail: FAST (modified mounts)
Injectors: Holley 75 lb
Peak Power: 562 hp at 7,000 rpm
Peak Torque: 497 lb-ft at 5,000 rpm
Ave HP (3,000–7,000): 444.4 hp
Ave TQ (3,000–7,000): 464.6 lb-ft
TQ at 4,000 RPM: 469.5 lb-ft

The TBSS was about 10 hp & 13 torque better LS6 on an engine dyno per the engine used in the Hot Rod article. Note at 4,000 rpm the TBSS was 15 foot pounds of torque better!

One thing to note here is the throttle body size difference: 78mm vs. 90mm. And note how "big" power-wise the engine was. The difference in throttle bodies would not account for such a power increase on a near-stock engine. The test engine was way more flow-hungry than most bolt-on-only engines would be. Long story short, while the SS manifold is very good, don't expect huge power increases on stock or near-stock engines. Just my .02.
