I do not have a glovebox sticker so I dont know my axle...I want to change fluid with Mobil ! synthetic but I'm not sure if I need to add the limited slip fluid...What would happen if I didnt? what would happen if I did & my axle wasent a positraction one? All LS1s got some sort of posi unit, either Torsens or Aurburns. If you have a Aurburn, you don't need additive, the Zexel Torsens do need it. From what I've read only 98s got Aurburns and 99+ all got the Torsens. Probrably wound't hurt it even if you did put limited slip additive in with an Auburn.

GM Muscle pretty much covered it. You can also check the gear ratio by looking at the plate on the end of the driver's side door. GU2 = 2.73, GU5 = 3.23. GU5 also comes with an aluminum driveshaft.

Agree with everything except the posi's are backwards: Auburn needs additive, Zexel doesn't.

For SS' and Firehawks: Yes, `98 got an Auburn standard, `99+ got the Zexel. NOW your `98 could have a Zexel and your `99+ can have an Auburn IF you car has SLP options. SLP offered the Zexel (98) then the Auburn (99-02) as Y2Y options just like the Bilstein, Dual/dual, etc. Check your door jam to make sure.

Yep, I typed it backwards. The Aurburn should get the additive not the Torsen. Torsens are gear designs and the Aubruns are clutch designs hence the additive.

Both wheels in the air, a Zexel will counter-rotate like
an open diff (unless it's a T-2R, which is rare aftermarket-
only) while an Auburn or other clutch type will turn both
in the same direction.

Put some Gm slip additive in and get in a vacant lot. turn your steering wheel all the way to right and make some circles then turn it to the left and do the same. Don't try to cut no donuts just take it easy and this will usuallty take care of the 98 popping noise.
