I had this chirping sound coming from my engine back in the spring. Obviously the 1st thing to do was to check/change the belt and drive pulley. I ended up buying a new belt and new pulley. As far as I noticed the chirping sound went away. Starting at the beginning of this week it came back 20X as loud. Its so loud infact Im embarrassed to drive the car. It sounds like I sucked up a 200 pound Cricket. I already took the belt off again and inspected it. That was fine. I did not take the pulley off figuring that was also fine. What else could it be. Im not positive but it seems like it chirps once per revolution. When I accelerate it also chirps faster.
If it makes any difference I had a Cam installed back in May I highly doubt that could have anything to do with the Chirping. Anyway I any info would be great. Id like to drive my car again soon and just hear the Rumble and not the chirping.

In all likely hood it's the idler pulley even if that's what you replaced the first time, there's also a pulley for the AC.

Yup, I know exactly the noise your talking about. As mentioned by DARK AGE 53, I ended up removing the AC belt the noise has gone away and hasn't come back since. Check the AC pulley, I bet that's it!

I think its the AC too. I was just told on another forum that it could be my Power Steering. THey said if its low you are pumping air into and it chirps???? Mine is low SO it could be. Im gonna try that 1st cause its easier and then take the AC belt off. Are there any gains running without the AC belt? Probably not much of anything right?

ok filled the Power stering, remoevd AC belt and still chirping. My accesrory Pulley is not even 6 months old.. Id hate to go buy a new one and find otu thats not even the problem. Its much louder towards the bottom of the engine. Is it possible its that main pulley? DOnt know esxactly what the name is. The one you need an actualy pulley tool to get off.

pull the belt off the accessory pulley and run it for a few seconds, it wont hurt, see what happens.

I thought about that and asked someone but they told me that its bad to do that. lol, so I dont knwo should I just try. Id have to let it run 15-20 sec. the chirp doesnt start right away takes like 10 seconds.

Same here...had the annoying chird...replaced the idler pulely and belt...went away for a little bit...then BAM...came back...what is the p/n for the a/c clutch pulley?

Guys you're beating your head against a wall, it's the idler pulley. There's a TSB out about this problem, I'm not sure but I think the number is 990601007. Check with your dealer and see if it's covered under warranty, I believe the TSB has something about a revised pulley and bracket.

Yeah it must be, i just did everything agian and cleaned the belt, I traced the sound to either the idler Pulley or the water Pump pulley. My car is out of warranty so i guess im gonna have to pay for that crap. Its sounds like a good fix to me though. Anything to get that cricket sound out of my head!

Your car may be out of warranty but I would still check with the dealer because there was TSB about this problem, tell the dealer you already bought a pulley out of your pocket and GM should pay for this one...what do you have to loose by asking?

i think it might be the AC one too. i ran without the AC belt for a couple months cause i couldnt find the smaller belt for the asp pulley. i noticed it a few weeks after i put the ac belt on.

will the dealership warranty it if i have an aftermarket crank pulley and a cam <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Even though your car is out of warranty, if you bought the pulley from a dealer, it should have its own warranty. I don't remember if it is 6 mos, or 1 year. Give them a call and see what they say.

Does anyone know the correct TSB number for the revised pulley and bracket? That one is not correct.

I'm not sure if the bracket comes with the pulley or the TSB was for only the pulley, if you checked with a Pontiac dealer that number might not show up? Good luck.

Basically its 3 new part numbers.
12563326 Double Row Idler Pulley Assembly revised
12563327 Generator Bracket revised
12562626 Serpentine Belt Revised (longer)

Thats the problem and those are the parts to fix it. Now im off to see if GM wil be giving them to me for free. I highly doubt it!

I'm wondering if that's the alternator TSB and not the idler pulley TSB, I don't think that will cure your problem. I just replied to your e-mail, looks like I haven't been of any help here.

For my '99 Z28, there were TWO TSBs - one for each belt! I just had this done at the dealer this week. Here's the first one -

SUBJECT: Accessory Drive Belt Squeak/Chirp Noise (Install New Double Row Idler Pulley, Generator Bracket and Serpentine Belt)

MODELS:
1998-2000 Chevrolet Camaro
1998-2000 Pontiac Firebird
Built Prior to VIN Breakpoint Y2107225 with 5.7L V8 Engine (VIN G - RPO LS1)

CONDITION
Some customers may comment on a squeak/chirp noise coming from the accessory drive serpentine belt. The noise will be most noticeable at idle and low engine speeds.

CAUSE
The serpentine belt squeak/chirp noise may be caused by misalignment between the idler pulley and crankshaft pulley. A slight rocking motion of the idler pulley causes the misalignment, which results in noise.

CORRECTION
To correct this condition on vehicles built prior to the above VIN breakpoint, install the new generator bracket, double row idler pulley and serpentine belt following Service Manual procedures.

Condition
Some customers may comment on a squeak noise coming from the engine or accessory drive while the engine is running. This squeak may vary in volume and may be heard inside the vehicle with the windows up and the radio on.

Cause
The idler pulley dust shield may distort during assembly due to torquing of the mounting bolt. This distortion may cause the Idler pulley dust shield to contact the bearing race and the pulley resulting in the squeak noise.

Correction
A new idler pulley assembly is available with a thicker dust shield to prevent the distortion of the dust shield. The previous dust shield thickness is 0.61 mm. The new dust shield thickness is 1.37 mm.

Important:

^ Do not over-torque the mounting bolt or the condition may reoccur.

^ Do not use pneumatic or electric tools for installation of the idler pulley assembly.

Tighten

Torque the idler pulley bolt to 50 N-m (37 lb ft).
