It has to/should be done at a dealership, they will then place a sticker on the door panel that says the odometer has been altered on this vehicle. It will kill the resale on the car and really F with your insurance company when you go to make a claim.

do they just use a tech 2 to do this? one of the guys at a local shop said he can do it he just needs to pull the cluster out to do it. but id like to do it myself and save $$ beings im already $300 into this cluster swap.

I work in parts at a gm dealer. On clusters we have to call specmo. give them the vin, mileage, part number and whatevers wrong with it. they ship us a reman unit and we send in the defect. we also have to keep the car until the work is complete so no more miles can be out on the car.go to specmo.com and see if they work with the public. i doubt it because its federal offense to change that stuff without proper documentation. if you keep the car then its no big deal. no one will know. as far as i know the tech 2 will not change mileage.

Well also you have to look at state inspections or places that record mileage. If one year you go in at 41k and the next year it show 13k or somebody buys it with less, the DMV will come to know cause it will show.

and it will show on the carfax that the cluster mileage was changed, which would affect it no matter if the sticker is there or not

So if you ever plan on selling your car later on be prepared to take alot less unless you sell it to a kid or something. But that's alot of hassle and loss of funds. How different is the font on the other cluster? I dodn;t know there was a dfference, just thought it was different color at night.

Why not just swap the bezel if that was what you were after? I thought they would swap out.

im not putting less mileage on the car just the correct mileage. the cluster i installed has the incorrect mileage obvioulsy since its out of a diff car. so it would show the correct mileage if it were to be totaled or sold. no issues there. and the bezel is diff, the font is diff, and it lights up a diff color. thats why i put it in.

Just put the old cluster back in when you get ready to get rid of it or get it inspected or whenever an official would need to look at it.
