Default Car Won't Even Crank, Just Rapidly "Ticks"

I posted this in the tuning forum, but it hasn't gotten many views, so I hope it's okay that I post it here, as well.

Today, I decided I would finally take the time to reset my TPS in an effort to alleviate some of the idle problems I've been having. I followed the procedure as directed in Another_User's tutorial, only I unplugged the IAC rather than the TPS on my first attempt.

I tried several times to get the TPS to reset to no avail. I set the screw to 3% with the key in the on position, turned the key off, unplugged the TPS, turned the key on, waited 10-20 seconds, turned the key off, plugged the TPS back in, and turned the key back on. Each time, HP Tuner's showed the TPS at 3%.

After five or six attempts, I tried to turn the car on just to see what would happen. I pushed the clutch in, turned the key, and the car made an awful, rapid ticking sound. I tried to start the car several times and got the same result on each attempt. My shiftlight flickered in conjuction with the car's ticking, if that may reveal anything.

An hour before, I washed the car, pulling it out of and into the garage with no problems at all.

Any help you all could offer would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Josh

I had the rapid ticks and the dashboard light show last weekend. I had pulled the car out into the drive to do some work on it. I went to start it up when I was finished and... tick, tick, tick, and several rapid flashes of the dash lights. Swapped my wife's battery in real quick and she cranked right up. So I bought a new battery. End of story. My window motors work much faster now too.

Wow, thanks guys! I figured since all the dash lights and accessories worked the battery wasn't the problem. Glad to know it's nothing major.

Thanks again,
Josh

should just be your battery. Just buy a new one. But after you put it in get it running I would check the alt also. Just get a volt tester and see if you have a range of 14.6 to 14.8 and you will be golden. If it says 12.4 then you need an alt.

Check your battery voltage first. If its real low charge it and try again. If its normal, start checking for bad connections.
Mine turned out to be the ground strap going to the block.

It was the battery. I jumped it off then let the car run for a while to recharge. Now everything seems to be working like normal.

Thanks again, everyone, for all your help.

Josh
