you should use an LT1 flywheel and clutch assembly for it. I haven't seen any other way for it yet

Well i wouldn't use a LT1 flywheel if your BBC was externally ballanced being the LT1's are internal.I looked into this awhile back cause i was going to put a t-56 in my 71 camaro i had at the time. You can use the pull stlye clutch with a special flywheel and t-56 hydraulics.i think Hays made one for it ill have to dig up an old article. You can do a google search and probably find more info

I have a flywheel that will bolt right onto your 454, and allow the use of a LT1 clutch and trans. I bought it from McLeod, planning to use it in my El Camino, and changed my mind. Let me know if you are interested. It is brand new, never installed, and I think I paid something like $350 for it. I doubt I will be using it anytime soon, considering I already sold the trans. Make me an offer.

I think the ls1 trans is stronger too, I have one behind my twin turbo SS.
I dont think the bellhousing bolts up to the BBC like the LT1 one does.
I would need an adapter. If I do that I should just find a viper t56.

Sandman120 - Its a 427 not a 454 - the 454 flywheel has waights on it, I dont think It would work for me, but I'll find out.

Thanks again.....

If you have a 1 pc rear main the lt1 should work. I had a 2pc rear main on my 383 so i had to get a different one. If you have a 2pc, you have a couple different options. Mine is centerforce, but i think fidanza makes one also. The centerforce one i have is counterbalanced...pn 183-700173 through jegs. What you will need to do is use your dampner (or an identical one but yours would be the best) and an identical crank and this flywheel and take them to a machine shop and have them balance match it to your dampner, identical crank, and your old flexplate. Should work fine then.

Guys you may want ot check your sources because I've always read the LT1 tranny was stronger. I've always heard peopl talking abouyt how funnyi ti was that GM would put the stronger tranny behind the weaker engine.

Again slightly mis-leading. yes it seems the LS1 tTransmission gets hurt more pften...then again the LS1 makes alot more HP then the LT1. Inside they are pretty much the same save for a early 93 Trans.

There are many options. It looks like you want to spend the cash so get ahold oh McLeod or D&D and order a complete kit ready to drop in. After it is all said and done it will save you money

And yes I do work on T56 transmissions on a daily basis

The bellhousing from the lt1 (or ls1) engines will bolt up . You need a special fly wheel for either, and mcloed can make them. I have a t56 in my 454ss tow vehicle, that made 350rwhp/ 490rwtq, and it is held up fine for years now. BTW, LT1/LS1 Fbody transmissions are internally IDENTICAL. The input portion of 4th gear gear is a litttle longer to accomidate the slave on a LS trans, but thats the only difference.

I thought you just worked on those silly slushboxes?

I'd do the McLeod bellhousing / LS1 transmission, personally. The McLeod bellhousing has both LS1 and SBC bolt patterns on the block flange. I'm assuming the SBC bolt pattern for the bellhousing is the same as the BBC. From there, I'd talk to McLeod about how to set up the clutch.

Either that, or like Ellis said, get a true retrofit trans. It will indeed likely be cheaper than piecing something together.

Thanks for the info.
I was also looking at the tko's - 500 and 600.
There is kits for those that are almost bolt in.

We'll see what happens when the gov-ment sends me my cheeze.

To do a real good 700r4 is 2g's or better, just to make it last a few years,
after seeing the beating my SS's t56 has taken, I think it would last a long time behind a 427. If I can keep the conversion in the 2g range I would be very happy. So 2g's x 20% (it always costs more then I think) factor = what? - 2400 or so.

HEHE!

How you doing man!. I tried to call a while back but the number I have must be wrong. Shoot me a Pm!

On topic.

Either one done right could easily cost more then $2k. Hell I have about $2k in my tans and my car came with it!
