You sure it's not blueish smoke? Known issue with the PCV allowing oil into the intake. Causes blueish smoke under WOT. Catch can would help solve that so would a thicker oil. Lemme guess, Mobil 1 5W-30 is what you use?

If it is black then might want to try some Seafoam. If there is carbon build up it may help get rid of that.

This is a normal condition of the LS1. It is probly blue and it is caused by the poor design of the pvc system. It is actually benifitial to the exhaust valves believe it or not. The exhaust valves take a beating and the oil keeps them lubricated and cooled. The less restrictive your exhaust system is the more noticable it is going to be. And if it is black smoke on accel it is just carbon and other dirt that has collected in the exhaust system and when you go wide open it just blows all the crap out. You should have nothing to worry about. Don't listen to the guys telling you to get ready to pull your motor apart.

Black smoke is problay just carbon especially if you have cats mine does that.
Blue smoke is definatly oil.

Its actually not abnormal for a vehicle with a free-flowing exhaust to blow a puff of black smoke when you first get on the gas. When you start up and drive your car under daily driving conditions, carbon gets built up in the engine and the exhaust system. When you floor it, that carbon gets blown out the exhuast, which is the black puff of smoke you are talking about.

If it does it all the time run some seafoam and fuel injector cleaner through the engine, might be dirty in there

The inside of headers & ORY will load up with soot to be
blown out once exhaust gas flow gets serious. Sustained
black smoke (not to mention the residue) probably has
to do with the excessively rich factory tune, not to say
it can't be made worse by some mods (such as headers
causing mis-trimming and positive fuel trims that carry
over onto an already-rich WOT tune, not to mention the
stuff like cat overtemp protection shoving excess fuel
down it to protect something that's not even there now).

The puff of black smoke was there all the time, it's just the cats were taking care of it, now you have an ORY, you no longer have cats, so you see the smoke
It's made worse by the fact LTs make the car run richer (in general)

A tune would help, but how long have you had the headers on, it takes some time for the PCM to adjust to the freer flowing exhaust
As for who in Houston, post in the Texas section, they should know better than anyone

sorry to intrude in the thread but i have a 2000 T/A bone stock and i have also been told that mine puffs out some black smoke when i punch it. do you guys still think its just because of the rich tune from the factory?

That is a 4+ year old thread you bumped! That may be a record (for this week anyway)!

Yes, I would highly recommend getting tuned!
