Default AHHHHHH My axle fell out while driving!!!!!

Holy crap. So I'm driving along this morning and making a left turn at around 10-15mph. I hear a loud bang in the rear end and I complete the turn and begin to accellerate (Not getting on it at all just normal driving) All of the sudden the car pulls hard to the left and I hear this scraping. I look in my mirror and my damn tire and axle are bouncing down the road on their merry way. I immediately pull into the center turn lane in the road and stop the car. Meanwhile my tire/axle are still going down the road narrowly missing another car. they finally come to rest about 100 feet in front of the car. Upon inspection turns out all four bolts on my brake backing plates came out. Now they have been on there ever since I had the rear end (moser 9") and I've never taken them off since they were put on probably 20k miles ago or so.

Damage wasn't too bad. My LCA on that side took most of the abuse and nothing else scraped but that. When it came off of course the caliper came with it so it ripped the brake line off there. parking brake cable is still in tact and the only other damage was a scratch on the quarter panel where I think the axle hit it while tumbling out of the car. Thank god the axle/wheel didn't hit anyone they are 35 spline axles and together with the wheel prolly weight about 100lbs or more. Definately be using major amounts of locktite on it when it goes back together. Oh well this gives me the chance to do the gear change I've been wanting.

Will

My torque arms bolts loosened up alot. I checked it one time and I was able to make a few revolutions by hand.

Damn, and I thought I was the only one...when I finished my ls1/t56 conversion I was driving to the exhaust shop, thought I hit a pothole, but no, it was my front left tire that had come off. It was wierd sliding down the HIGHWAY... at 65... with no tire. Got lucky, it didn't hit anyone. In have felt your pain. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Mad]" src="gr_images/icons/mad.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Embarrassed]" src="gr_emb.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" />

Happened to me last year at the track I was just turning in the pits. It's scary. Brake line part is cheap.

I've always been afraid this would happen to me ever since I changed my own axle. Sorry to hear about it happening to you. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" /> Gave me a good laugh though <img border="0" alt="[jester]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_jest.gif" />

Has this been trouble in other aftermarket rearends?? Or only the Moser? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" />

After reading about PSJs problems I used red loctite and lock nuts on those backing plate bolts and on the torque arm bolts I guess it's better then having C-clips?

I've loctite Blue'd my Moser backing plate bolts twice now. Yes, they came loose again and I tightened again last week. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" />

Time for the red, I guess.

I wish Moser had engineered the backing plate bolts, and the torque arm mount, better. Those are my trouble spots for loosening. I can tell because the rear starts to make funny noises. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

MacGyver

Sorry about your trouble. The story is too funny. Can only image what its like seeing the axle and wheel rolling down the street. That has to be be the best definition of WTF!!!

Somebody could get killed if you were at high speeds when something like that happened. I would also like to know what company most of you guys got your equipment from. How often does an incident like this happen to folks running non-OEM rears in their cars?

It's kinda funny how there's all this stuff
about C-clips being unsafe, how you have to
have C-clip eliminators on some classes to
race, and here the "better" retention scheme
falls apart because of bolts untightening....

Show of hands, how many stock (C-clip) axle-
came-out stories out there? And of these,
how many street vs race situations? Presuming
you distinguish between the two <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

well its good practice to check the backing plate bolts occasionally. if an axle breaks that has c-lips...you run the risk of ejecting the axle at WOT <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" /> that would be bad. if an axle breaks with c-clip eliminators...it isn't going anywhere <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />
