Default What are symptoms of a bad axle bearing?

I think my wheel bearing may be bad. There is a noise coming from the right rear wheel area. Hard to describe it, but the noise gets faster as the wheel turns faster. It's pretty loud, but it's been like that for quite awhile (few thousand miles) and never gets worse. It's not the wheel, or the aphr. I checked that. Anyone?

If it's a "roaring" kind of noise it could be a tire. I've had it since the last tire change, but I get no vibration. It's been a long time since I've had to replace a rear wheel bearing on one of my cars, don't really remember the symptoms. I DO remember front bearings squeaking, especially when cornering. Hope this helps.

It's not the tire. I actually put on a different set of wheels/tires a couple of weeks ago and the noise is still the same. Since the noise gets faster as the car speeds up, I figure it's the bearing. Possibly the caliper, but I doubt it. Doesn't sound like a pad rubbing. Thanks for replying, though. At least someone did

Its probably a side carrier bearing or an axle bearing. Sometimes when an axle bearing goes bad it will cause damage to the axle shaft surface. Both make about the same noise and it does speed up the faster you drive. Kinda sounds like this: roar.........roar..........roar...

I'm sure that's what it is. But it doesn't seem to get worse over time, that's what made me wonder if it was something else.

from how you are describing it I'm getting the same sound. Yesterday I jaceked the car up and stuck it in 6th so it could freely spin. It is not anything from my calipers or break assembly period. Mine almost sounds like it is coming from the middle of the dif. Check the oil and it was a little low but not much. Added some but the noise is still there..

I had EXACTLY the same problem. I got under the car while the rear wheels were raised and spinning. With a mechanics stehoscope I listened to the axle housing ends, middle and pinion area. The noise was clearly louder on the passanger side end. I replaced the axle bearing and the noise is gone. The noise must have gradually gotten louder because I had forgotten how quiet it should be (like it is now).

I had problems with the rear axle bearing in a truck i used to own. everytime the bearing went out oil would leak where the axle leaves the housing. the increased axle movement from the bad bearing makes the seal leak. you might want to check the seal for leakage as an indication of a bad bearing

I had a similiar noise awhile back that was barely noticable but easily heard especially when there was a wall close by (i.e. toll plaza). The culprit? An out-of-round rear rotor! After they were turned it was gone. Something to do with the parking brake assembly if I recall right. It's been years.
