Ordered a moser 12 bolt today, I know moser says not to use synthetic but a have a whole case of amsoil in my garage! Anyway I went to the eaton web site and they mentioned nothing about not using synthetics, they even said that if you do use them use a non RTV sealant on the cover. I E-mailed them just to check so I will keep you posted until then what are your thoughts and experiences with synthetics? Nothing but good ones for me!

When I had to put a new posi in my redneck truck last February, I went with an Eaton posi. I remember in the instructions it specified that you are NOT to use synthetic fluid of any kind. Not sure of the reason why though.

When I talked to Moser, they said no Synthetic.

When I put synthetic in my stock auburn 10 bolt, I peeled rubber and to my amazement got only 1 wheel to spin. And at the burnout box only made smoke with one wheel. My car also went sideways. Now with my DTS 12 bolt, I have dino oil and can peel both rear tires evenly. My conclusion was the synthetic was too slippery and caused the wet clutches in my auburn to slip so it didn't transfer traction like it's suppose to.

I know this is a bit of a falacy. When i first got my transam I had a huge oil consumption problem. I tried Castol (dino), Valvoline and Mobil 1 synthetics. Nothing helped. Switched to Amsoil and my consumption went from 3 quarts every oil change to 1/2 a quart. FYI some years including mine call for synthetic in the rearend. Amsoil and just about every other sythetic manufacturer add friction modifyers for to thier lube for use in limited slip rearends (both clutch and cone). I think I am going to break my rear end in on "DINO" and then switch to synthetic. Anybody ever tried that?

odd. i've been using amsoil 75-90 in my stock rear end, never had a problem, works great. i too ordered a moser about 3 days ago, and my uncle is an amsoil dealer, so i was just gonna use that, i think i'll give moser a call and see what they say and why they say it, but my rear end works great with the amsoil...odd...

stock rear end (which has a torsen differential) calls for synthetic fluid in the manual. The torsen doesn't use clutches for it's operation, so there's nothing to slip. (It uses gears and springs IIRC) The other posi units are cone (auburn) or clutch(eaton) type, I know the clutch types will usually slip if synthetic fluid is used with it.

My 00 and 01 vehicles specifically call for 75w90 synthetic fluid in the manauls. I think it is best to go with what the manufacturer (moser in this case for the 12 bolts) says and to use non-synthetic oil.

eaton has still not answered back, but like I said on their webd site it said.

"If using synthetic fluid use a non RTV sealant on the cover"

I removed the synthetic from my '02 SS rear axle and went to a mineral-based lube, but still added the GM limited slip additive. That was right after purchase. Because of previous earlier "whining" issues on my '99 M6 SS is reason for doing so. My opinion is that the mineral based lubes keep them quieter longer--and that's JUST my opinion. Ya I seen the fax page. They recomend mineral based, acualy they recomend Texaco 80-90. Which they also add availible at any Gm dealership. Sounds a little fishy to me! Try going to.......
