A co-workers WS6 had this noise...for him, it turned out to be coolant leaking into the power steering cooler!

He had to buy a new PS cooler and pump. not fun.

mine has been whinning for over a year now, sometimes its worse than others. Fluid is fine, and I see no leaks. Power steering works fine too. I worry about it every now and then, but everything seems fine so far.

I had my pump replaced under my extended warranty a few months ago. The steering was fine though with the old one, just noisey.

mine wines like crazy. and i just drove it from Cali to FL 2 days ago. it ate fluid along the way, about every 300 miles i had to refill it. I cant find a leak, but there seems to be some accumilation around the top of the reservoir. i dont know, maybe the cap isnt sealing properly? we shall see im taking it into the shop tomorrow.

Whining is simply air, low fluid or a bad pump.

If its air it probably starts after some rough driving and cornering. Mine does that. If its low of fluid you probably have a leak somewhere.

Pumps do just go bad and do that. A new delco pump will be fine. Poor Ford guys... There pumps whine no matter what

I'm not sure what a new pump costs but it should be no more than an hour or two of labor. Obviously the total would depend on what the labor rate is.

I just changed mine today. Took about an hour. Don't pay someone unless you really aren't mechanically inclined at all. Take the pulley off, a couple of bolts for the pump bracket. Rubber line on the right side of the pump resevoir. Hard line on the left. Then connect the new pump to the resevoir and mounting bracket and reinstall.

I've heard draining the PS fluid and putting in mobil 1 power steering will get rid of most whining and that some dealers will try this first before replacing the pump.
