Default What does the word CAMARO mean?

The word has to come from someplace. What is the real meaning of it?

I went to www.WEBSTERS.com and no luck. I guess it is a pretty cool name. Only 35 years old and I've never met anyone, or anything else call "Camaro" before. Someone must know?

I was under the impression that it was a mythical bird like an oriole (sp?). It kind've makes sense since the firebird is a mythical animal too.

I've heard it was from Russian "Comrad", or "friend".

I've heard other stories too but I don't remember them, and I can't remember what the real story was.

Mabey Google will know?

Edit: Found it. Courtesy of F-body Hideout

As the launch date neared, the car still had no name. It had been called various names by GM, including Nova, Panther, Chaparral, and Wildcat. Chevy also considered using the letters "GM" in the name, and came up with G-Mini, which evolved into GeMini, and finally Gemini. General Motors Headquarters killed that name, because they didn't want the letters "GM" used in case the car was a failure.

Finally, the car was introduced to the press as the Camaro, considered to be a good name because nobody knew what it meant. Chevrolet produced an old French dictionary showing that the word meant "friend" or "companion", but Ford found an alternate meaning in an old Spanish dictionary-"a small, shrimp-like creature."The automotive press had a good laugh over that, and an even bigger one when one journalist found yet another meaning-"loose bowels." It didn't take long for the laughter to stop after the introduction of the stunning 1967 Camaro!

Loose bowels??? That is just sick. I will never be able to look at my car the same way again.

I can see the personalized plates now "LSBOWEL" or "JOHNSON" (little warm friend )

Also from Websters:

Corvette - French, from Middle French, probably from Middle Dutch corf, a kind of ship, literally, basket
1 : a warship ranking in the old sailing navies next below a frigate
2 : a highly maneuverable armed escort ship that is smaller than a destroyer

please don't mention the word "chevette" ever again... what a mistake by GM. Am I the only one thinking that since they're bringing back the GTO, the Chevelle should be brought back as well?

We bombed the Yugo factory because it was found that they were also producing AK-47s and various other small arms during the "cleansing" effort of the US against Yugoslavia and the '**** for Brains' President that was running the country at the time.

We would have done well by also bombing the Chevette factory, but the buying public in the US spoke with there dollars (or, in actuality, there lack of there buying dollars) and killed the production with very little fanfare.

Good riddance!
