Default Best Upgrade for a Stock 98 LS1

Can a get a list a the first few mods i should make to my 98 LS1 Trans Am. I will probaly first go with a free flowing exhaust, i am familiar with this area. Then i will probaly put a cold air intake on it, but i don't know where to go after that without having to get too expensive. What are a few mods that are a must have for optimum horsepower gain for a reasonable cost. I want to shoot for 350-400 horsepower to the wheels. What will get me there and for the cheapest. Only thing is, im not a big fan of nitrous. thanks

First off I would take a look at this sticky: So you wanna be fast?

Secondly, exhaust is always my first choice when modding a vehicle. On these cars the LS1 makes plenty of power in it's stock form, so suspension would be my next choice. LCA's and brackets, SFC's, torque arm and a panhard bar. As far as the transmission goes I would get a 3500-3600 stall, tranny cooler and a shift kit. You could do the tranny work before the suspension if you wanted but it will be more expensive so I guess it just depends on how much cash you wanna spend up front.

cam and supporting mods will put you at 400rwhp. assuming you know you're going to have to get a decent size cam.....
springs, pushrods, ported oil pump, all your gaskets, ls2 flywheel, better timing chain to name them off the top, i know i'm missing something....subframes are a must BEFORE modding so to not dimple the rear.
Trust me, 400rwhp isn't cheap. try 2k, if you do it right.....

I just got my Z28 a few months ago, I did this:
1. SLP lid
2. Magnaflow catback
3. Getting my TB ported polished
4. BMR lowering springs
5. tune up NGk plugs, MSD wires, fuel filter, Seafoam, BG fuel injector cleaner, Good Oil change(Royal purple)

then go tear up the streets!!
I didn't get a ORY because the cops in my suburb have nothing to do and didn't want to be hassled. Just with the Maggy the car is pretty loud.

You can add this to the list:
LT headers
LS6 intake
underdrive pulley crank only.
2800+ stall if auto
I drive allot on the highway so Im not messing with gears.
get some Z06 heads port them with a nice cam and you will have a beast.

something else, plan your mods....to many guys get on here and buy something really expensive and then they dont have the money to get the part that supports it i.e

"guys i just bought $1000 headers, whats the cheapest shittiest catback i can throw on because im a dumbass and im broke"
or
"guys i just bought a 90mm TB but i dont have money for a manifold"

if it takes you a while to save money....do it and do it the right way

A new set of shocks are not that expensive and will make your car feel like new again.

Best post yet. I totally agree with him. Get a budget and a plan. And when I say plan I mean a long one, not a short term. I got my plan, its going to take a while with a few loses here and there but you will get there. Start with supporting mods first. 400 hp takes alot of cash so just dont go the easy way to 400.

I guess, my budget will most likely to allow me to hit 350hp, i will probaly be happy with that. I guess my main goal is for me to be modded enough to beat stock vettes and other stock LS1's. Anyone know what it takes to beat the vettes of the later 90's to 2004? I know its the same motor, but i know the vettes are much lighter and a few other odds and ends to give it a little more juice

If you have an older high milage engine still in there esp since the 1998 block isn't renouned for being the best, then I would look into mods that wouldn't detriment the longetivity of the motor until you can get a new motor.

IE

Underdrive pulley
adjustable suspension
tires
lightweight wheels
aftermarket k member

you will be faster, more MPG, the car will be ready for your high power swap, and the engine will be under no more strain than it currently is.

the 98 TA i just bought is fairly low mileage, only 45,000 miles and it spent most of its life sitting in a driveway. An older man owned it, then sold it to the guy i bought it from, who didn't have it for long. Ha ha ha, the guy said it was too much power for him and he replaced it with a v6 firebird. Im trying to take all this, thanks for all the help.

If the car is a M6, the best first mod, is the Skip Shift Elimanator. Getting rid of Computer Aided Gear Selections makes M6 cards more fun to drive. Next a Lid.

A4, first mod, get a Lid
