Default Engine Masters Challenge

Anyone in here keep up with it? We're entering our LS7 head 6.0 block engine for the second year in a row. Last year we placed 8th, and hoping for a little better this year. The rules aren't much different this year other than shaft rockers, and 500 less rpm. We were the highest placing carbureted engine last year, but going efi this year. Leaving out Sunday morning for the long drive from Atlanta.

Nope, none needed. We sonic tested the block last year before we started the build, and there is plenty of cylinder wall for what we were wanting to do.

so you had no oil consumption issues with a 4.185 stroke,. that thing makes amazing numbers id love to get close to that out of my 418

None whatsoever. It's all in the piston design. But if I had to do it all over again, it wouldn't have a 4.185 arm. Those numbers suck actually. The friction factor was turned off on the dynos, so the numbers were 70-75 hp, and 50 tq low. It actually made 805 and 670 at home.

I always wondered about the dyno in this competition. Also wondered how accurate they actually are.

There were a few things going on with the dyno's this year. From my understanding, it stems from last years competition where the engines actually made the corrected power that was close to what it should of been. For whatever reason, some people didn't like the numbers. You have two readings on a dyno, observed power/tq and corrected power/tq (which is what everyone goes off of). There are several factors that determine corrected power. I still don't have a real good understanding on how it was figured this year. What I do know is that the friction factor (engine bore/ stroke) was all entered equal for everyone, regardless of actual displacement, which affects corrected power.

Seems to me there is some politics in the competition that play a hand in certain things also. Just reading along year by year it seems there are the same group of guys who stay up top in placement pretty easy.

I'm not sure about the politics, but I do know that the Engine Master's people do listen to suggestions and competitors input, and take that stuff in consideration when making rules for the following years. The guys that you see on top year after year are the best at what they do. Those guys are going to be hard to beat. Someone like me, I'm proud to finish behind professionals, and ahead of other professionals when I just do this stuff on the weekends. I didn't go into the competition expecting to win, but I did have a goal of top 10, which we achieved. We were on the dyno only three times testing things on the engine prior to the competition, so I'm very happy with our results.

You did very good

What was your correction factor?

The dyno uses a JJ-xxx Spec for the correction for geographic location and conditions at that location and it might be totally different from the dyno/location you tested the motor on + the difference in the dyno itself

The calculation before the pulls came out to be just under 1.04

That is a heck of an achievement in my eyes. If i had half that knowledge i would be in good shape. Finishing with the best of the best is something to be proud of.

I wish i had someone who knows that much to help me with my build lol
