Valve spring locators, to use or not to use?

Valve spring locators, to use or not to use?
First off i'm using spring locators in my upcomming project so this does not directly affect anything i'm doing as I will always use them. However, me and a buddy have been having the discussion back and forth about their use and solid rollers of .600 or greater lift, mainly on the street. My question to you guys is that it seems that alot of these heads are not comming with any id or od locators from the manufacturer according to my friend. Is this because they do not feel they are necessary? Or is this because they rely on you to install the proper id or od locator?
Also, what do you think of effects on valve spring life with the use of locators vs. the non-use of locators. In the non-use of locators a flat shim would take the place and act as a spring seat instead of the od or id locator. Thanks.

From what I know, the locators are used to protect the head from the base
of the spring - especially on AL heads.
There has been talk about locators stabilizing the spring whereas a shim will not.
I personally don't see a problem using the locators as long as the seat/open
pressures and clearances have been accounted for.

No idea, but if I had to stick my neck out and brainstorm, i'd say the effect
on street engine valve trains would be little to none.
On a high pressure spring turning 8K+ RPM, keeping the coils in line would
reduce harmonics and control the valve more effectively.
I can just imagine how a coil-over setup would function in a suspension if
the top or bottom of the spring "walked".

I agree 100%, but i'd like to see some input from those who have first hand experience with running locators vs. not running locators. To me the spring moving around would cause significant problems but I don't have a spintron or anough experience to make any conclusions. With a solid roller on the street though and over 200 lbs on the seat I think locators are worth their weight in gold but just want to hear what others think.
