Exclamation Dyno vs Track Validation

I was reading gm high tech performance's article on lids for the 3rd time and noticed that the lid (MTI) that did the best on the track (measured in MPH) did the worst on the dyno! And we are talking about well over 5hp which I would have no problem calling a dyno fudge factor. Presuming they kept the temps relatively normalized... what gives?

MTI bought the most advertising that month so they drove the car harder.

A lid works by directing air into the intake channel. No dyno can duplicate the amount of air which will be flowing through a lid on a drag strip pass. On the dyno, the car, and the lid, are stationary with only a cheap fan blowing on the front of the car.

Well considering that the change is roughly a little over a 1% difference I wouldn't worry too much about the lower hp numbers. I didn't even bother reading that article. Way too many variables to determine a clear winner.

Buy whatever lid is on sale at the time.

i did my own testing.
i found that 99% of all lids fit like crap.... but the SLP ones are the least crappy fitting, and strong enough not to snap when you flex them to fit.

since the lid not cracking when you screw with it is important to me, i reccomend the SLP lid.

It was the same article reprinted for their 10th year.

All lids are the same,im sure the stocker would do just fine also. But who has a stock lid anymore. The lid is the first thing you do when you buy one of these cars.

Won't that setup run hotter than a lid?

I'm sure the run to run variation on the track was less than desirable; Changing ambient temp, track temp, varying launch rpm w/six speed, heat soak, etc. The differrences in runs were probably within normal run to run repeatability.

Run to run repeatabilty alone would invalidate the results alone. Think of it this way, if they ran the MTI lid 5 times, you know they would have had 5 different times, and if they did the same on the dyno, it would have made different power each time.

i think we can all agree that any lid is an improvement over the stock lid, which was DESIGNED to restrict airflow and slow down the camaro, so the corvette could be rated a high hp.

Well, I found on my '98 WS6 A4, after tuning the stock lid and aftermarket lid dyno pulls were within 1 to 1.5 rwhp, A-B-A testing. They lean the car @ WOT, and stock tuning normally being too rich, that seems to be where the gains appear to come from. May be different with a modified engine, but that is what I found with my stocker. All 8 pulls were between 322 & 324 rwhp, and if you didn't know which pulls were with which lid, you could not tell by looking at the graphs. Made 2 pulls with the stock lid, 4 pulls with the LS1 Motorports lid, then 2 pulls with the stock lid. Finally gave it to a local kid I try to help some, who thought he really needed to have one. Kept the stocker on mine.
