The C6-R Program was definitely on top of the list already. Give me a few minutes so I can brainstorm.

Are we talking in forms of racing or just production vehicles? What they are doing with the DRCE III Is quite amazing as well.

sprry guys some idiot (ie me! lol) forgot to post the link!

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/news/de...?storyId=16238

keep it production engines though. i love race motors but thats not the same now is it?

as for advanced tech, well you have sequential turboing on both gas and diesel engiens, compound boosting, advanced ally tech in block materials (ie magnesium), direct injection tech (the BMW 335 runs at around 15-1AFR even under boost!!!!), not to mention doing all the with the emmsion guys breathing down your neck! then you have the fact that these engines have to run in all condistion form the arctic to the desert.

kinda makes a race engine look a bit soft and temprimental. lol

BMW is one of the big innovators in automotive technology and they have been for years (http://www.bmwworld.com/engines/index.htm). I think that from the sound of the description in the link, the Twin Turbo In-line Six for the i335 sounds like a great engine. I'm glad to see Chris' post and I'll take it at face value that he is not seeking to stir up a hornet's nest of bashing foreign automakers.

I also share Patrick G. concern that we keep the threads in the Advanced Tech forum on topic and not run off the road into the ditch so often. The guidelines for this forum (posted in the sticky) are probably more ignored than any other forum here at LS1Tech.com.

All modern engines (foreign and domestic) owe a great debt to German ingenuity since the early 1900's. For instance, Robert Bosch holds or has held most of the basic patents used in modern fuel injection/powertrain control/yada yada yada.

Back to BMW, I especially like their variable valve lift design that moves the fulcrum point on the rocker arms/cam followers to throttle the engine as well as tailor the performance of the engine to the demanded power.

Steve Bryant, thanks for that post! really nice to see that some people see what you write in the correct light!

oh and totaly forgot about the variable valve lift thing!

could you guys ever see similer systems used??? obviously it was Honda that started the whole Vtech thing off but it seems like BMW has taken it several steps further!

also what about the diesels????? gone have the old noisey tractor engines. now they are silky smoth torque monsters that make power all the way to the red line! also they are running 4 valve per cylinder heads (dont lets start this off agian! for the aplication its better!) and ally construction! could anything be taken form there design and used by aftermarket companys to help reduce head lift???

for me id really like to see a magnesium ally block for the LS engines. they might not beable to take quite as much power but they would be a good bit lighter!

thanks Chris.

The Chevy Duramax Diesels are 4 valves per cylinder AND pushrod!!! How you like them apples??

J/K

And regarding the Magnesium block for the LS1's, I think the price it what keeps it from becoming reality. One of, if not THE best point for the LSx series was the very low cost/hp.

Again more of my .02

The Duramax is an extremely advanced Diesel design. My son has a 2002 Crew Cab with the Duramax and the Allison Transmission. He has a Hyper Tech tune in it now and it's pretty impressive. One day, when I have some time I plan to work with the tune using EFILive.

Anyway, it's an amazing engine (four valves/cylinder, aluminum heads, etc). Here some more information about the Duarmax/GM/Isuzu http://www.shadetreemechanic.com/duramax_diesel.htm.

My dad purchased an 06 GMC Sierra with the LBZ Duramax and the 6 speed Allison auto. The only problem those trucks have is that at 650lbs/ft STOCK, the tranny doesn't have much room for additional torque before it starts to slip.

With some of those tuners you can make north of 800 Lbs/ft@2000RPM(at the motor)!

How much of a weight savings are we talking about for a mag block over aluminium in an LS1 for example? Thanks.

Is Magnesium that much weaker than aluminium? Thanks.

I would like to see a 7 litre LSX with VVT and DI in a Mag block.

i know you said we weren't talking racing engines, but since diesel's were on the table... i am completely amazed w/ what audi has done w/ the r8 and r10. a quiet diesel that's virtually unbeatable for a year and a half. that's impressive to me.

well i think Audi did a great job on the engine, but really they where taking advantages in the rules! it allows bigger engines and more boost and bigger restrictors. the marketing was fantastic to! they really made the most of it.

im not knocking them in any way. in racing you do what you have to do to win! i think this will push the performance deisel even further. you only have to look at the EU market as see that the slikes of Skoda are now making performance small cars that are diesel!

be nice to see if the likes of Audi will cary on using the diesel unit once the rule makers tighten the ruels on it!

thanks Chris.

haha i must admit i dont know much about them. but form what i have heard they are great!

i think the cost is a concideration with the LS. but i wonder how long for?? cars and engine seem to be much more "throw away once broke" now. maybe this is why the likes of BMW are useing the exsotic materials, because they dont want you to be using the engines apart from in the car its is intended for!

thanks Chris.

Well if you want production for overall power and longevity. The Toyota 22R is pretty damn nice!

Anyone remember these little buggers?
