Default LS Piston Experts- Using LS pstn in 1stGen 283

Im putting a 1st Gen 283/Vortec heads in a 57 Chevy pickup I have..
Right now Im in the motor planning stages and have run into a shortage of
decent pistons. Im going to be using a 44 lb crank and 530 gram rods and
wanted to run equally light pistons with this combo... most off the shelf 283 pistons are heavy... so Im considering LS pistons if such a hybrid is possible.
Ideally, of course, I could find an off the shelf LS piston to work.. with either
5.7, 5.850, 6.0, or 6.125 rods in the 283.... the stroke is 3.00.. bore is 3.875

.... .060 over on a 283 is 3.935..... .030 is 3.905... with many different
LS1 stroker combos available I thought I would at least examine the possibilty of a match..What's out there.

To put it simply, forget you ever read a piston catalog. Done that? Ok, awesome. Now do the math: Take half the stroke, then your rod length. Take the sum of that from your deck height. The number that is left is your piston compression height to put you at zero deck. Now, call a number of piston manufacturers and ask them for a price on a set of pistons in whatever bore and compression height you choose. Voila! Any nice cast or forged piston nowadays will weigh less than the 30+ year old slugs that came in the car. Good luck!

Edit: I don't know what the nature or use of the engine will be, but how hard it's run or if a power adder is used, will dictate the location of the ring land from the top of the piston. Also, mention that you're using a Vortec head on your 283 (I didn't even know that would work, learn something new every day!), so they'll get a general idea about where to cut for valve clearance.

Nope. Biggest reason is the stroke, which puts the pin height way off.
