Can you tell if an LSx engine has VVT or AFM using the VIN? If not, how can I tell?

Planning to do a cam swap on a 07 5.3L V8 Avalanche. I need to figure out if it has VVT or AFM before I accept the job since I don't know of any aftermarket cams that can be used in engines that have VVT or AFM. Do any sponsors sell aftermarket cams for VVT/AFM equipped engines?

The 5.3L has AFM (which can be turned off with EFI Live or HPT) and it does not have VVT. Some, but not all of the 5.3s have the larger single bolt on the snout of the cam as opposed to the 3 bolts like conventional LS1s have. You'd need to know this in advance so you could order your cam correctly.

That's the problem. If the AFM engine has a single bolt as opposed to the conventional 3 bolt pattern I need to be able to figure it out ahead of time, rather than having to wait until after I've pulled the timing cover to find out. By the time I pull the timing cover off I want to have all the replacement parts sitting on the workbench waiting to be installed. If there are cams available for AFM LSx engines I don't know about them.

Here is a breakdown of all GM truck engines for 2007:

You should be able to get the information you need.

If you want to PM me the VIN - I can pull it up through GM Global and tell you exactly which engine it has.
