Default 30 SMT LED tower front turn signal switch-backs, Pics !

I started installing a lot of the little items I've had laying around for the car. One of the coolest LED products I've seen is the new 30 SMT LED tower front turn signal switch-backs. These are made in a new 48 SMT LED tower also, but I don't think that will fit in the housing ( too long ). Also, I don't think I really need it to be any brighter, it's so bright in the housing that when you turn on the running lights it looks like a DRL (driving light) from a 98-02 firebird. It's pretty cool that the SMT's will change from white as a running light to amber when you activate your turn signal.

Here are some various pics: ( Pic quality is descent, but still a camera phone (Iphone 3G, 2 mega-pixel) )

$50 +, but probably worth it when you see how good these things look in person.

did you have to use "load equalizers" to make these work right?

He'd need clearcorners for that... I put clear 194s in my stock markers and all they did was dim them down (looks cooler, imo), turn the yellow ones almost a very slight greenish hue at the center of the light, and make the back red ones noticably dim, which is fine cause I don't like having spotlights on the side of my car...

Towers in your tail lights WILL NOT be brighter! I had them for a bit and promptly got rid of them because they were half the brightness of the stock bulbs.

You are 100% incorrect (not trying to be rough, but you need to do more research), if your brightness was cut in half then you purchased the wrong design. I have spent tons of money testing different LED setups in all marker locations and the current generation (good LED's) of products, especially SMT style are re-donkulus bright ! My 25 tower SMT rear tail-lights and 25 tower SMT rear backup lights are way brighter than stock bulbs. Their is no comparison, just ask BLACKBIRD WS6 how bright the rears are on his car Not to mention, response time on a LED is much faster than an incandescent. When you step on the brake, LED's immediately light up the tail-lights a split second faster (it's very noticeable).

Brian2006,
Your absolutely correct on the EL12's, it's the only way to do it correctly. Load resistors are a pain and put off to much heat. You will need two EL12's (1 for Hazard circuit, and 1 for blinker circuit).

ZexGX,
I have front clear corners with a 194 6 chip amber in the marker position and the 30 SMT tower (switch-backs) LED's in the blinker position. I have stock lenses in all the other locations and the color saturation is fantastic on my colored lens marker locations.

Blackbirdws6,
You will pony up sooner than later

For the brake lights I've seen places say I should go with the color of the light housing so I should go with the red ones correct? Or did you just put the white ones in there?

I did a few searches and could only find your post on project transam with no link to the supplier, all the results also show a generic flood light for household apps. I wasn't aware these towers even existed and was looking at using a luxeon solution.

Can I get a link in a pm?

Strobin SS - from what I've read you want to go with a red LED, the explanation I've seen is that the red lens cancels out all other wave lengths of light so putting any other color in is pointless.

I could see this being not applicable if the reflector distributes the light better than the LED gives it off. I look forward to a response though.

In my '99, I already have an EL12 for the blinkers, but I'm not sure if it manages the hazards as well... Previous car owner installed an aftermarket alarm and I can only find one flasher module, and it's for the blinkers. Should there be a separate one managing the flashers on a '99?

You will need a second EL12 for the HAZARD relay if you want your hazards to function correctly. If you pull down the cover panel that your knees are up against (if your tall) You will find the hazard relay on the right about 1/2 way down on a metal clip. It's so obvious you will miss it about 3 million times before you see it staring you in the face
