Before I start exploring and ripping into ****, how do I replace the light in the steering wheel radio controls. Its the volume, mute and play buttons if it makes any difference.

You can't replace them, they are soldered in place. I just opened up the side that was working and busted the other bulb so they would both be off. LOL
You can pull the entire switch assembly out of the front of the wheel if you work on it carefully and pry with something. Then you will see that all three buttons are on one switch container. That container has tabs on the side you can pry open to get the front off and see inside. Of course, no way to disconnect the wire easily, so you just have to work on it sitting in the car

Re: Steering Wheel radio controls. Burnt out light!
It is possible to repair a burnt out bulb in the Firebird/Camaro steering wheel radio controls. Here's what you do...gently, carefully pull out the burnt out control with your fingertips; disconnect the control from the wiring harness behind it. Then take the control to your workbench. Open it up; it is kept closed with a manufacturing inspection "label" that you can cut with a razor blade, or peel off. Then, carefully open it up. Inside, you will find a small circuit board, with the burnt out bulb soldered in the middle of it. (On the Firebirds, the red color comes from a small plastic "hat" over the bulb.) Take the circuit board to a store that specializes in parts for TVs and VCRs, and use the burnt out bulb for comparison purposes. Buy a new bulb that is similar in size, and is 12V (very important). Mine cost .50 cents. Either solder in the new bulb yourself, or do what I did: stop by a TV repair shop, and have it done for you (for me, it was free). Reassemble the control, making sure you put the little pins that secure the buttons to the entire assembly in the right place, close it up with fresh tape, plug it back it, and presto! I fixed mine last May, and it still works. Sure is better than buying a new assembly from GM for $70-odd bucks!!
