With the price of lowering springs, you would be better off buying a new set than cutting your stock ones.

People that have done it will tell you its ok to cut them, but I dunno. I bought hypercos from LG when they were on sale at $169.

After buying and installing a set of Eibach Pro Kit springs they lowered the car A LOT more than the advertised 1.3-1.5". I have seen a few pics of cars with Sport lines and my car sits lower.
The ride is total crap too. I installed new shocks at the same time and no mattr how I adjust the firmness of the shocks I can not get rid of the bounce.
So here is my thought.
Since the stock SS springs are a single rate spring (as are the WS6 springs)I am going to cut about 1-1.25 coils off the rear spring. Being a single rate spring this should not have any effect on the handling of the car since it is not changing the compression rate of the spring. A progresive rate spring is softer at first and gets firmer as it is compressed, so cutiing these "might" have an effect on handling.
I am going to use the stock spring in the front and and not cut it and just adjust the spring down on the HALs.
I am hoping this will eliminate some of the bounce in my ride.

My advice on springs, if you buy new springs be conservative on the advertised lowering height, because for some unknown reason ALL springs lower the car nearly 1" MORE than advertised.

So if you want to lower your car 1 1/2" DO NOT BUY springs advertised for 1 1/2" Buy springs that advertise 1" OR LESS.

SLP Eibachs are advertised NOT to lower the car, well they lower the car nearly 3/4" to and 1". Hotchkis advertises a 1" lowering spring that looks good too. I know there are others too.

As for what I did, I bought SLP Eibachs. The lowering for the rear was PERFECT IMHO, but the front seemed a little too high, so I cut 1/2 a loop off the bottom of the coil and the ride height is PERFECT! I also installed the Bilstein shocks and the rides beautifully!

There are pics in my album >>> My Camaro SS

For cutting stock springs there has been a lot of talk about doing it lately, appears to work for most folks, do a search and see what they have been doing.

I wouldnt advise cutting the back and front the same. The cool thing about the rear springs is that they are so easy to pull off you can just cut a little at a time. For the front srpings i would recommend anywhere from a full coil to 1.5 coils. No creaking should result from cutting the front and the back should be cool as long as you keep the spring spacer (perch), or something similiar like heaterhose, on the spring. This is what keeps the back spring from makign noise.

Honestly if you have access to a shop and the tools I would just say cut the factory springs.

Not everything for these cars has to be expensive to work

First I cut the stock springs a full 1.5 coils. It was way low and way cool but I couldn't get out of the driveway with my SLP LT headers So knowing that I could mess things up I had ordered take offs from SLP. I cut again but this time only a little over a 1/2. OK, but still too low for the headers on some speed bumps. Only hitting occassionaly. So I bought the Level One Reinforced suspension kit from SLP and I am lower, just not that low, and the headers now rarely hit. The point is that cutting is fine. In Herb Adams Chassis Engineering book he recommends it and shows you how. He only suggest 1/2 coil. I used a cutoff wheel and then a torch to heat them up and press the spring down to level out the last ring.

It is not really the headers that hit but the exhaust clamps. I made sure the studs faced down so that they would make contact first.
