Question Buffing

I have deceide the swirls have to got. And buffing is the way to do it. What is the procedure to do it though. I dont want to mess the car up like I heard you can. I really wanna make it (my car) look good and compliment the Stull Grille (which, I am glad to say, I am warming up to). How do you all do it? Have you done it? Results? Thanks,

John

use a 3m compound with a high speed buffer.

keep the wheel moving from the left to the right as to not stay in one place too long as the compund can "burn" the clearcoat off. take it easy nearing the edges of body panels and raised areas as the paint & clearcoat is not as thick in these areas.

Personally i would foam pad the car before i tried buffing it, you run much less risk harming the paint and that is the detailers choice way of removing light swirls. buffing is preffered for removing scratches rather than swirls. good luck

I reccomend the Porter Cable random obital buffer ($109 at Lowes).. then get some foam pads from Meguires and some microfiber bonntets as well.. Go on Meguires website.. the PC unit is the same as the one they sell and they explain it all

Its what I use and it works VERY well with ZERO chance of burning your paint.

I use/recommend the Porter Cable random orbitial with a CMA concave rounded edge yellow pad (quality pad). The 3M SMR is pretty darn weak, I like 3M Finesse It-II alot more.

Have you all done it on swirls? My car is very bad. I cant wax it, it looks terrible. They are visible until sun down all over the car, what are the chances this will work?

Go here - this does a fantastic job of explaining what you'll need to do, with what products, and you can purchase them should you choose to do so.

I used the menzerna polishes with the porter-cable 7424 and had astounding results in terms of swirl removal.

the best product that i have used to remove all the swirls is the 3m perfect-it...it is a multi step process...aggressive to no grit....get's just about everything out...removes oxidation as well..made my old '97 tahoe look new again...

improtant when going through the process is using a different pad for each step...not to mix the product and take you time...it took me two days to do the whole process - that included an interior detail as well...but everything came out perfect...as far as upkeep after that - the Meguires 3 step process (cleaner, polish, wax)...

the extra time is all takes is worth it...

Definitely with the d/a method, more buffing only creates more swirl marks, than go back by hand with the glaze, than finsh with several coats of wax (perfect-it 3 comes to mind)

Buffing does not create more swirls unless your using a heavy cut product. Even then, you don't fill those smaller swirl in with oils/fillers (glaze) then wax over them. You step down to a more mild polish and take care of the smaller swirls and then you wax the car.

Buffing, when done incorrectly (with a direct drive buffer), will create swirls, but done correctly, or using a dual-action polisher, you are safe, and you will get the results you desired.

Joe DIESO is spot-on.

What is the difference between a Dual Action Buffer and a Direct Drive buffer?

Buffing DOES create swirl marks even with the lighter compounds and glazes,no matter with which pad you use, always go back by hand with the glaze and finish with a good coat of wax,you will not be disappointed
